Year of Projects: Crochet Master Class – Filet crochet, part 2, and week of giveaways day 4
(This post is part of my Year of Projects: Crochet Master Class series. You can find my other posts in this series here.)
Back in May, I hosted a yarn swap/project blogging adventure through the Blog Hub group on Ravelry. I received this awesome skein of Araucania Ranco sock yarn from Lou of the Knitted blog. When I started the swap, I didn’t realize that more than half of the group would make a project within a week to post about. (Yep, I thought everyone was like me, with mountains of WIPs in various stages of completion competing for their attention.)
I felt pressed to find a use for this yarn so I said I would make a pair of socks (as part of my crafting goal to make a set of socks from Toe-Up 2-at-a-Time Socks). But then I got to thinking. Why use this beautiful yarn on a pair of socks that were my first try at a technique I might not love when I could use it for an awesome crochet project as part of my goal to work through Crochet Master Class?
One reason lacework has never appealed to me is that I prefer vibrant colors to the white/off white/ecru/cream/aran colors of most crochet thread. So I decided to try a little experiment on my filet crochet project.
I’m pretty sure that filet crochet is still not a technique that I will love and want to curl up with while watching t.v., but at least it gives me a way to immortalize my favorite phrases from pop culture. And now, without further ado, the Eric B. and Rakim video I attempted to embed last week!
The Giveaway
Today’s giveaway is the fourth in my week of giveaways in celebration of my 100th blog post. You can read the other posts (and enter the giveaways) here, here, and here.
Today’s prize is Crochet Master Class: Lessons and Projects from Today’s Top Crocheters. (Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while are probably saying FINALLY! After all, my entire year of projects goal is about working my way through the book and I’ve also reviewed it
.)
The book is brand new (don’t think you are getting my well loved copy!) and is a really wonderful treat for any crocheter.
You will have 10 days to enter each giveaway. To enter for a chance to win Crochet Master Class,
- Leave a comment on this post by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, August 18, 2011. Be sure to include your email address (which won’t be displayed) so I can contact you if you win. (Please note that my comments are moderated, so if you are a new visitor, it will not appear immediately.)
- For a second chance to win, like the Underground Crafter Facebook page. Then you can either post a comment on Facebook or here again so I will give you a second entry. (If you already like my Facebook page, you can still post a comment for another chance to win.)
- For a third chance to win, share the link to this giveaway via Twitter, Facebook, or your blog. Then post a comment here with the link to your Tweet or blog post, or leave a comment on my Facebook page so I will give you a third entry.
- Since the book is fairly heavy, I will only ship it to the U.S., Canada, or Mexico, so please feel free to enter from any of those locations.
Good luck to everyone!

UK based, so not entering your giveaway, but I just wanted to pop in and say how awesome your filet panel is looking already!
I’ve got one on the go at the moment and I’ve stalled at about a third of the way in. But I think you’ve just inspired me to get working on it again
Filet is not my favorite but I do love the final result of filet. I wouldn’t curl up with it either
Oh – and sign me up!
Thanks TInk! Please check out my other giveaways this week since it is only the books that I won’t ship to the UK. Unfortunately, postage is prohibitively expensive since we can’t use the cheaper “media mail” option.
Welcome Cris! The final result is definitely beautiful, but perhaps too much delayed gratification for my taste
.
wonderful giveaway! looks like a great book for anyone that crochets at any level
i already liked you on fb
@ Lorraine: It really is a wonderful book – it keeps you inspired with the many techniques included.
Congratulations on your 100th blog post! That Araucania Ranco is truly beautiful, and what a fun way you’ve used it! I’ve never heard of filet crochet, but now I want to look it up!
@ Cheryl: Welcome. The yarn is really amazing and the pictures do it no justice.
Great book! Thanks for sharing. I do love the look of filet…just never had the patience to try!
Oooh. I was coveting that book. You did a fabulous job with that filet crochet. And I agree with the sentiment.
I can’t wait to see the finished product, it looks pretty darn good so far! I have perused the book before and would love to get my hands on it! Thanks for the great post and give-a-way!
@ Beth W: It definitely requires more patience than I have.
@ Diana H: They are wise words from Rakim. Thanks for your kind words and welcome.
@ MissH: Thanks, I am looking forward to it being finished, but not forward to making it lol.
I have enjoyed all your posts about this book and the lessons in it.

@ Christina B. – Thanks! The book is really great and a wonderful idea.
My hear skipped a couple a beats because I thought I missed out on round number two of Swap City. Please tell me you are rounding up stragglers and that I am not missing out!!!!
This is from the same swap you participated in Erin – it just takes me longer to find a use for surprise yarns
.
Another great giveaway!
I really love the Bruges lace shawl in this book – it’s just stunning.
Nice to see you working through your stash. Slow and steady is good.
@ CrochetBlogger: Thanks!
@ Voie de Vie: The shawl is really stunning. I have to figure out what I’m going to make with Bruges lace though
.
You did a good job on your project. I would like to try that.

Well I’m enter for sure. It sounds like a great book. I love the colour of your yarn and I hope the blog group has another swap soon, sounds like fun!
With ya on the white and off white, trouble is though many filet patterns just aren’t seen with ombre’s and variegated colors…but solid colors generally work nicely.
@ Asha: Thanks, it was pretty fun!
@ Melody: Thanks for the kind words and for entering my giveaway!
@ Sandy: I know, it’s true. But in the real life version of my project (not the photographed version), you can actually see the words pop out.
I love the look of that yarn – gorgeous colours. Sadly I can’t enter your giveaway as I live in Australia so good luck to everyone eligible. Have a great week.
@ Dorothy: Welcome! I have some other giveaways this week with shipping to Australia, so please check them out!
Beautiful yarn. I love the wording that you used. Not entering your giveaway as I’m in South Africa.
@ RugbyMad: Thanks! I am quite lucky to have been given such beautiful yarn in a swap.
I like filet because it’s easy to create your own design with graph paper, though it’s really only good for wall-hangings.
Reading about your crocheting adventures with Crochet Master Class, has caused me to desire the book for myself. *crossing my fingers*

@ Kacy: It is such an awesome book! Good luck!
I’ve learned to crochet over the past 2 years from books. It might be a bit of stretch–but I’d love to add Master Class to my collection of books.
@ PQBaggs: Welcome and I think you will enjoy it. The book is the type that you can return to for inspiration for years.
I’m not sure I have the patience for filet work, but yours is looking beautiful, love the color!
@ Julie: Thanks so much! I don’t much have the patience for it either, but for this project it has been fun.
