Non-yarn haul: Purl Soho
As I mentioned in the progress report on my January stashbusting efforts, I bought several skeins of yarn at Purl Soho in January. I was working against a deadline, worrying about running out of yarn, and they were the only store in the City which had the colors I (potentially) needed in stock. I ended up having enough yarn to finish the project, but Purl Soho’s store policies only allow for exchanges/store credit.
So on Saturday, I took a trip to Purl Soho to exchange the yarn. As I mentioned in my review of NYC yarn shops, Purl is a great shop but definitely pricey. (Cue up the tiny violins and the dramatic “I told you so!” voiceover about how haste makes waste. ”If you had started and finished the project earlier, you wouldn’t have been worried about the deadline and running out of yarn. If you weren’t worried about the deadline, you wouldn’t have bought pricey yarn you didn’t need.” To that I say, “True, but then what would today’s blog post be about?”)
With my store credit in hand, I looked around for some things – not yarn! – that would be worthy of joining my permanent collection.
- Addi Turbo Circular Needles
: Since I’ve only been knitting for about 18 months, my needle collection isn’t as well developed as my crochet hook collection. I was looking for a larger set of circular needles with a long cord, and this is the set I found.
- Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Knitter’s Almanac: The Commemorative Edition
by Elizabeth Zimmerman: I guess it was only a matter of time before I bought an Elizabeth Zimmermann book. I’m not sure I’m up to the challenge of reading lengthy knitting prose, but the rewards for doing so appear to be great.
- Socks a La Carte: Pick And Choose Patterns To Knit Socks Your Way
by Jonelle Raffino, Katherine Cade, and the SWTC Staff: This was a book I had eyed a few times when Borders was closing but never ended up buying. I like the mix-and-match book aspect a lot.
All in all, I’m satisfied. Yes, I didn’t really need these items but I feel this was one of those situations where I made lemonades out of lemons. (What is it with me and the proverbs today? Or are these idioms…?)

Ahh, so often I just focus on yarn that I forget that LYS also are a treasure for non-yarn “tools” for my passion. These are great additions to your library and needle collection.
Thanks Evelyn! Yep, there are other things in those shops besides yarn, but I’ll admit the yarn normally distracts me from everything else!
I love Purl Soho!
those are awesome exchanges! (I have both of those books, actually, so I speak from experience!) I hope you enjoy them =)
Oh, that’s good to know erin (the knitting squid). And erin (ekatearcher), Purl Soho does seem to have a very loyal following!
Just popping in to let you know I have passed on to you the Versatile Blogger award. Enjoy the rest of your week. xox
Thanks so much Dorothy! I really appreciate it.
