FO Friday: In the Mail! and Blog Hub Swap, Day 3
Last week, I was frantically knitting up swatches for the Craft Yarn Council Certified Instructors Program in Knitting class. Over the weekend, I learned a lot, met some wonderful people, and had a great time in the class. This week, I collected all of the sign in sheets from knitting classes I have taught in the last few months. (In addition to taking the certification class or correspondence course, you have to show that you’ve taught for 15 hours for each level of certification.)

My teaching forms are in the envelope. I get to keep the stack of swatches (to use as class samples or to unravel).
It is great to have that completed. I remember when I sent in my materials for the crochet certification, it took several months to process, so I’m still hopeful that I can meet my goal of becoming certified by May 1.
And now on to Day 3 of the Blog Hub Swap!
Today is Loopi Loopi day.
I suspected that this package might be a book of some kind because of the size and shape.
What an interesting surprise. You may remember that one of my crochet patterns was published in Inside Crochet in August, 2011. (I’ve since renamed it the Sunshine of Your Love blanket and pillow set, and will have both U.S. and U.K. versions of the pattern available for sale on Ravelry in a week or so.)
Heather from the Nude Ewe has really gone “above and beyond” with this item, as one of the required swap elements is a pattern and this magazine has thirteen patterns. I particularly enjoyed the articles (about crochet artist, Nathan Vincent; SIBOL; and fit by Dora Ohrenstein, whose new book I reviewed here). I think Irina Kireeva’s Spin-O-Rama pattern is really fun – what a great color work project.
But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the firestorm of internet activity related to the publisher of Inside Crochet, All Craft Media. Alex Tinsley at Dull Roar has summarized the issues pretty well in this blog post (along with links to other blog posts and Ravelry threads), so I don’t feel the need to rehash everything. Yes, I know they have appointed a new publisher, but let’s just say I’ll be waiting a while before submitting any patterns to Inside Crochet again…

The class sounds awesome! Glad you’re learning a lot!!!
Thanks, Stacey!
Nice haul! I’m eagerly anticipating my box coming in so I can start blogging about it.
I don’t know if the anticipation was worse before the box arrived or now that I can’t open everything at once, Vanessa!
Wow. I wish you luck in meeting your goal. I want to do that too, someday. I’ve read up on it, but probably won’t start for another year or two.
Welcome, Cecilia, and thanks! I hope it doesn’t take too long to get the certificate – I’m super excited about it!
Certification sounds like hard work. All the rest us of are glad of the dedicated few who are prepared to undertake it. I don’t even swatch that much for my own dear-to-my-heart projects, LOL!
Glad you had such a good time, good luck getting your deadline of certification. Must say it just doesn’t sound like fun to me. Seems it would be stressful, which is the very reason I like to knit and crochet…to reduce stress. Best of luck to you.
Hahaha, Sandy and Minding My Own Stitches. It is a bit of work to get the certification, but it makes me feel much more confident about teaching – so in it’s own way, it is a stress reliever!
I’m glad you mentioned the IC firestorm – it is important to designers. I must admit, I haven’t submitted anything to them and like you, I won’t for a good long while.
Nevertheless, it’s nice to see you getting through your swappy gifts.
Sounds like a decent mag – shame about the company; I’d heard some things via Ravelry …
It is really a shame, Vivianne and Voie de Vie. To be honest, it was probably my favorite crochet mag in terms of patterns and articles, so I really hope things improve with the new publisher.
So happy that the class went well and that you are on your way to getting certified. I went to Alex’s website and read her post about ACM. I have bought a few issues of Yarnforward magazine in the past, but going forth will be boycotting all of the magazines put out by this company. It is a sad situation when designers are treated with such disrespect and not compensated for their time and creativity. Thanks for sharing the info!
It is really sad, autumngeisha, especially since there are many wonderful staff there who have been really helpful, and the magazine really was sharing a lot of dynamic crochet patterns. I am hoping that this change in leadership will have real impact because I would love to have more confidence in Inside Crochet.
The class sounds great! Well done on getting everything together and sent off, I hope they get back to you soon! The Blog Hub swap looks like a lot of fun
Thanks, Liz! The swap is SUPER fun
.
I did struggle with this one a little because of all the stuff going on. As I’m not a designer I’ve never submitted a pattern to KAL/ACM. But they’ve been very supportive of The Nude Ewe and featured us a couple of times, and Kerrie has always been really lovely with me. Like the others I do hope things get sorted out to everyone’s satisfaction.
I’m glad to hear that Kerrie’s been supportive of you and the Nude Ewe, Heather. What a great cause! I really hope things get cleared up with ACM because it would be a great group of magazines to have confidence in.
