A secret, an unraveling, and a hiatus
There’s a fair amount of similarity between last week’s WIP Wednesday/Yarn Along post and today’s post.
I took a break from the Pineapple Doily Shawl since I didn’t take it on vacation with me and then promptly forgot to bring it to class with me on Saturday to work on along with my students.
My cabled hat has seemingly travelled backwards in time, going from this last Wednesday afternoon…
… to this yesterday.
If you are/were a fan of the show Seinfeld, you may remember this scene from “The Muffin Tops” episode.
That pretty well sums up what happened to my hat. I noticed an irregularity a few rows down and started ripping back. And then, one thing led to another, and I was casting on again. I’m not too stressed about it, though, because this is part of my Holiday Stashdown Challenge to make my winter holiday gifts slowly throughout the year rather than frantically in December.
And, finally, I’ve started a new secret project.
This is a sample for a freebie pattern I’m working on for Galler Yarns in Inca Eco. I’m having a lot of fun with this one, so I’m looking forward to unveiling it soon.
On the reading side of things, I finished Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain last night. I really enjoyed it and want to thank Evelyn from Project: Stash and Stacey from FreshStitches for introducing me to the book. I’m taking a short pause as I contemplate what I’d like to read next.

It’s nice you don’t stress about ripping out, it puts me in a not happy place. Never like the tv show, it never seemed funny to me; odd I know because everyone loved it. I didn’t like the main character either, so generally won’t watch something if he’s in it. He just makes me annoyed, he seems stupid and arrogant all at the same time. Hard to explain.
No need to feel bad about it, Sandy. I think the characters from Seinfeld are completely unlikeable, and to me the humor is in the random NYC weirdness that the show highlights (like stress over parking, bizarre subway situations, etc.) and how they basically get their comeuppance for being jerks!
As a big Seinfeld fan, yes, I think I remember every.single.episode, lol. Thanks for that!
That hat’s going to be gorgeous. I love cable work.
Welcome, del, and I’m glad I gave you a little giggle this morning. Thanks for your kind words on the hat!
Ha! “Why don’t I just get you a sundress and parasol and you can sashay your pretty little self around the town square!” My husband didn’t “get” Seinfeld until he moved to NYC. And then he realized that we’re all crazy. Your secret project looks cool so far.
I agree, Vanessa. Seinfeld just highlighted the insanity of some aspects of NYC life.
I love all the colors in your WIP photo! looks like things are going well, even with the rip-back and stuff!
Thanks, Mary! It is kind of fun having so many different colors going at once.
I needed a laugh this morning! I never got Seinfeld until later in the series. Now we own old dvds and stay up late watching them once in a while… lol!
I had to rip out a few rows (well, more like a bunch of rows) yesterday which kept me from finishing my latest wip. Maybe today I’ll be able to wrap it up and move on to the next one on my list.
Visiting from Ginny’s, ~Lisa
Welcome, Lisa, and I’m glad I could share a little laugh.
I often, no always find that if I start ripping back and end up with nothing and have to cast on again! I’m glad you’re not to stressed about it though as I get very stressed about it, which is why if I’ve made a mistake I tend to just leave it now!
I usually leave it, too, Sam, which is why I had to approach this time with humor.
When I read hiatus, I thought maybe you were taking a blog vacation! You can if you like, but it did really capture my attention! I am working on a motif project right now I am constantly having to rip back a row or two on almost every single motif because I get sidetracked and forget to count. In the long run, I’m glad I’m willing to rip back and redo to make it perfect, because I’d certainly notice the mistakes, even if no one else ever would!
I don’t usually rip back, Snowcatcher, since I’m fine living with mistakes. (After this, I might not rip back anymore!)
You are so clever starting your holiday knitting now. I think it’s a brilliant idea. I love the colour of the yarn for your hat, and agree that ripping it out is best, you don’t want an irregularity bothering you!
Thanks, Andria! I think I will be stress free in December.
You have a great variety of colours in the first photo! I love the sample of the secret project. Ripping out is always the best way to go if something is bothering you.
I’m not usually much for ripping back, but I actually screwed it up worse once I started ripping
.
No matter how stressful life is, I can always pause it for a Seinfeld episode. Thank goodness for reruns.
So wise of you to get started early on your Holiday knitting. I might join you if I can get a handle on some of my WIP’s and come up with a gift list.
That is a pretty purple that you are using for the freebie pattern. Can’t wait to see what it is.
You’re welcome to join in at any time, autumngeisha! I love the purple, too!
Sorry about the drama with the hat, but at least you’re not under the gun time-wise. I’m still absolutely loving that orange!
It definitely cheers me up when I look at it, Minding My Own Stitches.
