Holiday
I’m making good progress on the Bruges waves scarf for my friend, OB. I started it during my final Bruges lace class with Tatyana Mirer last week. (More details on the yarn and the classes.)

I like the contrast between the feminine curves of the pattern and the dark, unisex color of the yarn.
When I asked OB about her preferred colors for a possible winter accessory, she asked for charcoal grey, or black, grey, and white. What do you think – will she be happy with the color? (She was mildly shocked that I was already working on holiday projects!) I’m actually using the hook she gave me for my birthday (reviewed here) – I think that will add to the story behind the scarf. As soon as this is finished, I’ll pick my knitted hat project back up.
I dove right into my Year of Projects goal to make my mom a special bedspread for her milestone birthday in February. I spent the last few days looking for vintage (or vintage looking) motif patterns that I think she might like.
My mom doesn’t read my blog (I think), but we follow each other on Pinterest, so I gave the board a very cryptic name so she wouldn’t suspect its true purpose. (By the way, if you’re on Pinterest, I’m always looking for more needlecrafts boards to follow! I’m ucrafter.) I’m hoping to spend some time making sample motifs today since I’m off from work.
As for reading, I finished Halfway Human by Carolyn Ives Gilman (reviewed here) and started and finished two other books - Dying Inside
by Robert Silverberg (reviewed here) and The Righteous
by Michael Wallace (reviewed here) - since my last Wednesday update.
Right now, I’m reading The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. I love reading her dystopian
novels
– and it doesn’t hurt to know that she knows how to knit for a good cause. I’m about 30% through the book and the characters and story are still unfolding.

What a lovely scarf and how very organised of you! I’m still in the planning stages for gifts this year. I think the colour goes well with the combo she mentioned
Thanks, Paula! This year I’ve vowed to start my holiday projects early. If you’d like to join in with me, I host a Holiday Stashdown Challenge every Tuesday.
Oh what lovely Bruges work and the colour is beautiful. I’m sure your friend is going to be thrilled. Who wouldn’t ?? xoxox
Thanks, Dorothy! I think she will really like the semi-solid color.
Wow, so many gorgeous choices. I like lots of them but Marguerite took my breath away! Can’t wait to see what you decide!
Thanks, Minding My Own Stitches. My dear friend also recommended the Marguerite.
I think it’s great that you’re making her scarf with the hook that she gave you. It’s really beautiful and I’m sure will be received with plenty of joy! Thanks for linking to your review of the egg shaped hook. For some reason I missed it. I’ve been considering giving one a try, but don’t know if I’m ready to spend the money (I suffer from the same cheap syndrome!). Now when I’m ready I know which one to get (I live with a cat too…)
Yes, it takes a lot to motivate me to buy new hooks, Robin!
Nice scarf – Lucky friend.
Enjoy playing with the motifs.
Thanks, Mistea! It seems like a good project for a heat wave!
The scarf is looking lovely. I think the color choice is a good one and will go with a lot of tops. I have been wanting to play around with pinterest, but it looks
Iike you need an invite to get started?
Yep, I just sent you an invite, autumngeisha!
I love the scarf! I am now following you on pinterest.
Cool, thanks Melissa!
For your Moms bedspread you should check out http://www.purplekittyyarns.com/ for motif patterns. All of their knit and crochet patterns are vintage, free, and/or you can buy ebooks. They have patterns galore for everything!
Thanks, Iesadora! I love their collection of vintage patterns.
What a beautiful scarf
I am sure she will love the colour!
Thanks, Rachel! I’m loving how it is turning out.
