Year of Projects, Year 2: Bruges crochet design, part 2
I’ve been pretty excited about my first Bruges lace design since I developed it and made a sample last weekend. I actually started a second version yesterday so I could take some tutorial pictures to include with the pattern. It’s being tested on Ravelry as we speak!
I’m making this version with Austermann Step, a sock yarn I got in a Ravelry swap back in June.
Truth be told, I’m a bit afraid of variegated yarns. Sometimes, there are mystery colors hiding inside of the ball, skein, or hank that are just plain scary. In the case of this yarn, the color changes are unexpected, but still attractive.
Most of the yarn is a darkish green, which looks grey in these pictures for some reason. It’s more obvious in the close ups, but there are little flecks of brown repeated throughout which kind of pull the whole thing together.
I expect that this will be a holiday gift for one of the ladies in my dad’s family. I have four that I’m making gifts for this year. I might even make each of them a variation of the same design.
Assuming I have enough yarn, I plan to make this one an infinity scarf.

I LIKE the unexpected white and brownish bits! Of course you really do never know what your getting with variegated until you swatch. I’m still working through some in my stash that were relegated there after they didn’t play nicely with the patterns they were supposed to be made up as!
I like those too, Minding My Own Stitches! I am continually amazed by what happens when you make a project with a multi-colored yarn, and agree that swatching is definitely critical.
I really liked the sample of your design in the turquoise colourway but love this variegated version too. The interplay of colors works great with the lace pattern. I enjoy the mystery colors of variegated yarns when used with the right pattern.
As I follow along from last weekend.. I love the look of this but it is still a tad above my expertise..hopefully the tutorial you are putting together will allow me to get one going.. so I’ll look forward to that..thanks
Love this UC!!! I love working with variegated from time to time, does require swatches, totally agree….
It’s looking great so far and I think the yarn is gorgeous
Thanks, Lucie!
oh that’s pretty!
Thanks, kate!
I really do like both the bits you showed BUT I have a serious preference towards the green. I agree with you on the variegated yarns – It is hard for me to trust I have seen ALL the colors when I start the piece. I also am always questionable about how long each color will be. I don’t like short switches when crocheting. Otherwise, – LOOKING GOOD!
Thanks, Chris. Overall, I’ve been happy with the surprises of this yarn.
I really like the colours. And I think the pattern looks just as good in variegated as in solid yarn, which is the marker of a good pattern
Thanks, Emma! That’s a really nice thing to say
.
What a pretty lace design–and like others, I like the surprising bits of color…they keep things interesting while knitting. Christmas will be here before we know it, so good thing some of us have started a bit of that Christmas gift giving!
*smiles*
Thanks, Kim. These changes are definitely keeping me on my toes!
