Giveaway: Artyarns Shawl for All Seasons Kit

Posted by Underground Crafter on December 29, 2012 | Short Link

Confession time: Before I started working on surmounting my stash, I pretty much entered every yarn giveaway I came along.  It was by winning one such giveaway from Jimmy Beans Wool that the Artyarns Shawl for All Seasons Kit became part of my collection.

This is actually a pretty cool kit in the Purple Velvet colorway.  Apparently, it usually sells for over $60.  It is even available for both knitting and crocheting.

So why am I giving it away? Well, I’ve discovered that I don’t need quite as much bling in my crochet projects as this kit provides.  And since I don’t plan to use it, I’d rather it ends up with someone else who might get a lot of pleasure from it.

This giveaway is open to all readers.  Enter by 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, January 4, 2013.

To enter:

  • Leave a comment telling me how you would use this kit.  Would you knit or crochet?  Would you follow the pattern or design your own?  Would you keep the finished object or gift it?
  • For additional entries, like Underground Crafter on Facebook, follow Underground Crafter on Twitter, join the Underground Crafter group on Ravelry, and/or share a link to this giveaway on Facebook, Twitter, or your blog.  (And then, leave a comment here, on Facebook, on Twitter, or in the Ravelry group letting me know what you did!)
  • One winner will be chosen based on awesomeness.  (In other words, I will pick the winner based on the best answer.  If there are too many great answers, I’ll choose the winner randomly from my favorites.)

Good luck!

Oh, I’d definitely give this to one of my best friends. She’s had a really rough 2012and knitting is what keeps her sane through it all. She’s the type of friend who you can call at 3am or pm, always there to help. This would be an incredible gift for her.

  • kristen says:

I would knit this for my mother in law, shes had a tough year dealing with lung disease , being in and out of the hospital. She deserves a little warmth and love in her life since she is so giving to others!

  • Toni says:

oh wow what a lovely give away, my mil is really going threw the mill at the moment with fil not being well and her sister suffering from Parkinsons and Alzheimers and being on her own, mum looks after her as well ,but she still finds the time to help me and hubby, and takes me out to do the shopping (i panic out alone due to mental health issues and hubbys not always well enough to take me due to his own bad health) and she loves all the wee things i have knitted her so far, i would love to make this for her as a hug for when i am not around to give her one as she deserves so much but asks for so little.

i am a member on your rav group as well :)

  • Rose S. says:

I would compare the knit and crochet patterns and select from my favorite. It would definitely have to be gifted because my good friend and neighbor just lost her husband to an apparent heart attack on Christmas Day. It was a real shock because he has always been so very healthy and active. I would love to wrap her in love.

  • Evelyn says:

What a wonderful giveaway! You are always so generous. ; )

  • ~Julie says:

What a lovely kit! I love that there is sparkle and sequins. I have never knit with bling yarn before and would love to try. I would knit, but would probably try a different pattern. The yarn would have to talk to me for a while before I could decide on a pattern. I do not have a sad story (yet) to go along with my entry and praise the Lord for that! Thank you for the give-away.

  • Linda says:

OOOooo, first, I would have a look at the pattern, I’m a knitter.
If it was to my liking I’d cast on straightaway because yarn like this deserves to be transformed into something lovely. If I wasn’t sure of the pattern I’d go to my list of favourites on Ravelry (of which, there are many..!) and choose one worthy of the yarn.
I’ll probably gift it to one of two friends, both are deserving in different ways but if it was just too lovely I may have to keep it and make them something else !

  • Kitten With A Whiplash says:

I would knit something, but I don’t know what yet. Whenever I look at a kit like this, my age drops by several decades and I once again become a teenage rebel. “You can’t tell me what to do with my yarn!” becomes my rallying cry, and I immediately start running around the house gathering every possible pattern. Well, all but one – the one in the kit. Then I bend over to pick up a magazine, throw my back out, remember my age, settle down on the couch with a cup of tea and a heating pad and start knitting. And it may even be the pattern from the kit. Only I might be knitting that pattern with different yarn.

    Sigh, I am SOOooo complicated.

  • Jackie says:

I would knit one and crochet onee. Follow the pattern for one and make up my own for the other. When you get a great kit like this it’s fun to experiment and I would gift them both :-)

  • Ellada says:

Never used a yarn with bling in it :) Love the colors a lot !!!!
So I’ll knit ( hate to crochet ), from a ready pattern ( don’t have that much time to think about the design ) and I’ll gift it to me dear Mother. She had her 60th birthday and I still havent picked her present and she is into bling, so she will love it :))

  • sophie says:

i would definitely knit a lace scarf from this! Which patter, that I would need to think for a while but the purple color is one of my favs.

  • purplepenguin on ravelry says:

I would love to win this! I would do it in the knit version and probably follow the pattern. I might keep it as I am the only shawl wearing, purple loving person I know. (Note my screen name.) One Christmas, I did make a cashmere (!) shawlette for my step mom, and she NEVER wears it! I wouldn’t want it to go to waste. I love wearing shawls while on a cruise, so many people ask about them, try them on, and sometimes, ask to learn to knit. I have taught knitting while on vacation, just because I love to share the pleasure it gives me.

  • purplepenguin on ravelry says:

    Liked on facebook.

  • purplepenguin on ravelry says:

    Shared on facebook!

  • Karin says:

I would knit this up just as shown in the pattern. Purple is my favorite color, and the pattern and yarn are gorgeous, so I would love it!

Thanks for the drawing!! Winner or not, it was fun. :)

  • Cris says:

I would use this kit for my daughter – she’s all into sparkles n bling, so it would be a perfect item for her – perhaps a gift for next Christmas.

  • Mary AnneCutler says:

I would probably knit a self designed double smoke ring type scarf, size depends on the amount of yarn available. I would keep it, the colours would look good with my Winter Coat. A bit of Bling is always nice on the dull winter days. Alternatively, maybe the suggested pattern would enhance the yarn far better than my ideas.

Thank you for the generous offer.

  • Sara says:

I would so love to have that kit! I have been trying to knit a wardrobe of shawls for my Mom and purple happens to be her favorite color!

  • Renee Reed says:

Wonderful kit! I would knit it mostly likely. Probably was a gift for my DIL.

  • patsy says:

I would knit the shawl because I’m only a beginner at crocheting.

  • JR says:

Purple is my favourite colour. I would knit this for myself in anticipation of being able to wear it when I can finally wear nicer clothes. I’ve gone through some health issues lately and I’m not feeling the best. I have to wear comfy clothes at the present to help with my recovery. Once I’m better I can start putting some effort into how I look and the shawl would be the perfect accessory to help boost my esteem.

  • Jenny K says:

I’d knit the pattern since it looks lovely. I’d probably give it to my friend who’s into tango dancing since the outfits she wears are quite bare (why is it the men dance in full suits, but the women are barely wearing anything). She gifted me the kit to make the Sunflower shawl for my b-day last year, and I’m still working on that.

  • Knittingdancer on Ravelry says:

I would knit the shawl by the pattern. I would probably keep it for myself since I love purple.

  • Kathie Lund says:

Thank you for being SO generous
If I won this beautiful kit I would have to keep it – my very favourite colours.

  • Katie says:

Ohhh! I’d probably crochet it… but I’m trying to learn to knit too so I could try that too. Too many lovely options!
(I also am in the Rav group and follow you on Fb.)

  • Jane says:

I would love to win this package. It would be hard to open and use it as it is gorgeous just the way it is. I would use the pattern that the yarn was suited for. ArtYarns has wonderful patterns and I have knit several.

  • Craftink says:

Ok those colors cannot say my name louder! I can hear the yarn all the way to the UK. Sophieeeeeeeeeee!!!
If I will win this, I will probably go for the knitted version. I will stick to the pattern given, but I will maybe eliminate the yarn overs for an invisible increase as I am not a big fan of eyelets.
And yes, I am selfish, but I will keep it for myself. As I said, the colors just scream out my name!
    Really can’t you hear it?????

  • jessicac says:

I would love to win this! I would follow the pattern, and would gift it to one of my bestest friends. She has had a frustrating year, full of challenges, and would look fabulous in sparkles!!

  • Tina says:

I would make it for myself as I have yet to make a shawl!

  • Judith Gellerstein says:

I would follow the crochet pattern- I do much better with someone else’s ideas than mine. I would keep it as my New Year’s treat for myself :)

  • threeoutside says:

I’d knit it, and follow the pattern, and give the shawl to my best friend who has amazed me with her cheerful and practical and courageous dealing with rheumatoid arthritis. These are the kinds of colors and sparkly clothes she likes so I think she’d really enjoy it!

  • Gwendolyn T says:

I would knit, the pattern as is, and I’m not 100% certain if I would keep it or pass in on as a gift to my future mother in law.

  • Penny P. says:

The colors in this kit are stunning!! I would definitely crochet the shawl [following the pattern] since I don’t know how to knit…and it would most likely be given away as part of my church’s prayer shawl ministry.

  • An says:

I would make it in crochet, less thinking for me. Something I could do between my daughter’s surgeries on her knees. She has been very good about everything.

  • Karrie says:

I love purple!!! Not afraid of a bit of bling so it might be for me, I don’t decide until the item is done. I have not crochet in a while so I would likely knit it. Lovely kit fingers crossed winning would be a great way to start the year!

  • Amanda Kate says:

How gorgeous. I would knit the shawl, following the pattern and I would probably keep it for myself! I don’t make very many things for me, most of them seem to be given away so this would be awesome for me. :-)

  • Knitmomma says:

Stunning! I love the purple and all the bling.

I never am sure what I’m going to do with a yarn until it speaks to me, but right now from the picture this is telling me it wants to be several projects – trim on a simple shawl of handspun, the cuff on some fingerless mittens, and maybe an accent on a hat and/or scarf! I want to spread out the bling and make some gifts.

  • leslie says:

LOVE the colors (LavenderPixie is my Ravelry Name); I’d make a shawl–however, after reading all of the above entries, don’t pick me. I’m so not deserving of this! I’d probably make and keep, but I don’t have any amazing reasons for wanting more yarn except that I like the colors and sparkles.

  • Whitney says:

Since this kit is mostly purple, I would knit it for my grandmother, who is 85 and LOVES purple and bling! MawMaw is in a nursing home now, and I think this would brighten her day. She is the one person who truly appreciates the knitted things I give her, since she taught me how to knit. It has come full circle-she can’t see well enough to knit and crochet now, so I knit for her. She knit for me for so many years, and I never appreciated the sweaters, hats, etc. until I started to knit myself. She is so proud that she taught me a skill that I use, and I am so happy to knit for her. It’s such a beautiful kit, and I’d love to share it with her! Thank you for the chance to win it!

  • Ummrania says:

Ohhh I love it! I would knit a shawl with it for myself because I am in love with purple.

  • Darline Almeida says:

One of the things I love about this give away are the colors. My favorite color is purple. I would knit the pattern that comes with it. I’ve yet to learn how to design my own patterns, I’ll learn someday. I’d keep it for myself, but I’m sure my mom or one of my bff’s would borrow it from me.

  • Redhedhels says:

I’d definitely crochet it. I’ve been doing lots of knitting lately, but this looks like a good project too get my hook back out for. My mum loves a good colour scheme, with a bit of bling and I know she would appreciate the work that went into it so the finished article already has her name on it – a win for 2 generations, then!

  • Gretel says:

What lovely yarn! I am saving up to go home next year (Australia), and this yarn would make a lovely shawl/scarf for my daughter. She has five kids under 9 and buys nothing for herself, so this would be a treat for her.

  • Karen says:

I am a totally newbie knitter. I used to paint and be creative in many other ways, but my son changed that, and I was going mad. Love him to bits, but really I needed a creative outlet. Knitting saved my sanity, but as I am getting better I realize that nice yarn really makes the difference. But my husband has me in an evil yarn diet, but still I long to try out better yarns.

If I somehow was lucky enough to win this one, I would knit it, most likely following the pattern, but would first fondle yarn and feel if it wanted me to do something different.

After having given most of my knitting away I would probably be selfish and keep it for myself, but also love to give finished projects away once finished and sometimes simply know that this would be perfect for a certain person, but rarely know which person in advance. So one never knows.

Happy new year and congrats to who ever gets to hold this lovely yarn.

  • Debra says:

I just love the colours!!!!!!! I would do the knit version, and follow the pattern

  • Christina says:

If I had this kit I know that I would Knit it because I like the way knit shawls lay. My crochet is still a bit too toght even with all my practicing. It would definately be a gift. If I make something I deem “Beautiful” it usually becomes a gift because I love making pretty things for my Family and Friends.

  • Christina says:

    I like you on “FB”

  • Christina says:

I am a member of your Rav group.

  • Kris says:

I know a small person who would love a shawl knit out of this yarn!

  • Jen says:

I would love to use this kit to make the shawl for my daughter. She’s just started Jr. Roller Derby this season and this kit is in her team colors -green and purple! She could really use something to throw over her shoulders after practice, and she loves a little sparkle.

I think I’d do the knit version. I like the look of it better and I’m a faster knitter. I’ll have to get a good look at the pattern before I know if I’ll modify it any, but I don’t think a beaded edging could hurt anything!

I’m so glad I found your blog. I’ll go find your FB and Ravelry group right now! :)

  • Gina says:

I am a knitter. And I adore those colors. I would most likely follow the pattern with a few little twists here or there to shake things up a bit. I would gift this to either my knitting teacher or my sister!

  • Iesadora says:

I would crochet this for myself! Purple and green have always been my favorite colors!!! =D

  • Iesadora says:

I ‘Like’ you on FB =D

  • Iesadora says:

I follow you on Twitter =D

  • Iesadora says:

I’m in your Ravelry group =D

  • Kathy says:

I stumbled upon this giveaway bouncing around Ralvery today. I love the colors and would definitely knit the shawl. The colors are absolutely beautiful. I just finished my first beaded lace cowl by taking a class at my LYS. The owner, Carrie, is a wonderful teacher and I would be proud to show her what I can now complete because of her class. I would keep the shawl and wear it as much as possible to show it off :)
Thank you for doing this giveaway, it is very generous of you.

  • Sheila E says:

I would knit this up, being I have a year of knitting under my belt, lol. The kit states shawl so this is what its designed for, plus I would cross my fingers that I would have left over to make some fingerless gloves on the cool nights to slip on. The packaging is the best, and it would be for me the selfish knitter.

  • Jessica H says:

I would work the pattern both ways. Definitely knit the kit and then crochet another version with stash yarn. I am always on the look out for nice crocheted Shawl patterns and ways to use stash :D I would gift both shawl to my SIL and MIL, they are such a welcome addition to my life!

  • Laurel says:

The colors are SO PRETTY! I would knit the pattern per instructions and then give it to my son’s favorite teacher, Mrs. Neave. She was his second grade teacher and loves purple. She was very sweet and encouraging for him. (Plus, she and her mom love my knitting!)

  • Laurel says:

    I posted a link on Facebook :)

  • Stephanie B. says:

I would crochet with it and check put the pattern first, I’m sure I would like it and probably follow it. I would make it for my mom her birthday is in February.

I am part of your Ravelry group, which is fabulous! Happy New Year!

  • Raquel says:

I would knit this for my mother for her birthday in March. The colors are luscious and they would suit her beautifully!

  • scrabblebird says:

I would knit it and wear it myself, waiting for the occasion on which I could say to someone, “It would look beautiful on you. Would you like to have it?” I’m always looking to recruit new shawl wearers.

  • Debby says:

I would crochet the pattern. I’m new to crochet and understanding patterns and I think this would be a great challenge. I’m not sure, yet, what I would do with the finished shawl. Probably keep it for myself to spruce up a plain outfit. I’m in much need of fashion improvements!

  • Wendy says:

Artyarn’s Shawl For All Seasons: don’t covet.
But a triangle with borders? I love it!
    The colors are great,
    A knit shawl’d be it’s fate,
but with all of these great entries hope plummets.

  • Hayley says:

Well let’s face it, this gorgeous kit would probably just sit in my stash for a very long time (hiding from my husband) before being used…but when its day did arrive, I would most likely knit it up according to the intended pattern before throwing it over my shoulders in one swift and diva-like glamour-puss motion. I would then admire my new smooshy and blingy shawl :-) Bazinga!

  • Shirley says:

I would knit the Kira’s per directions.

I would give it to my cousin’s wife. He just pased away and she was an awesome caregiver to him as he battled with brain cancer.

  • I would use this to crochet something special for myself. I never seem to I am always doing something for someone else

  • Rachel says:

Such beautiful yarn. I would knit the shawl by the pattern and gift it to my best friend who just started her nursing clinicals. She loves anything purple and glittery. She is not able to work during clinicals and with taking care of four small kids, can’t really afford anything extra at the moment. She’d love this for her birthday coming up, and I’d love to make it for her : )

  • Rachel says:

    I followed you on Twitter!

  • Rachel says:

    I’m in your Ravelry group!

  • Teena says:

Wow! What a fabulous prize! I would follow thw pattern given, as I’m still new to knitting, but am up for a challenge, I definitely couldn’t afford this on my own…

  • Fantastic giveaway! Thank you ever so much! I would crochet. I don’t have any bling and would love to make this for me as I’ve just finished making things for everyone else for Christmas.

  • Calypso says:

Beautiful, beautiful kit. I would knit and create a new pattern, something airy as well for cooler spring nights. I liked you on FB too as Calypso Hope.
    Thank you again.

  • Ann Mikeal says:

I would probably knit the shawl… and try to follow the pattern, but sometimes it just doesnt happen that way, lol… Love the beautiful yarn :)

  • Heidi Ardizzone says:

The sparkly purples and olives soothe me as I put aside the stress and worries of the day and cast on dreaming of all the people I love who might love this shawl as much as I will. With my Netflix playing something in the background and my kitty curled up on my lap occasionally batting at the yarn as it drapes over her, the meditative click, wrap, tuck of my needles reminds me to breathe, to relax, to take care of myself. If the vagaries of the pattern interrupt that flow and force me to frog, I start again with another one… but Artyarns wouldn’t do that to me, would they? The shawl looks perfect for the long winter in an old house with drafty winters… mine, my mother’s, my sister-in-law’s. The women in my family share many things but a love of purple and an inability to resist old drafty homes are only two of them. Maybe it would become a Traveling Shawl, sent to the one who needs it most, rotated between the women, and any men who wish to share its purple sparkling goodness, in my family.

  • How lovely! I actually just saw a few of these kits up close and personal this past weekend. They’re incredibly drool-worthy. I am a knitter, and would most likely stick to the pattern, but I’ve been known to change things up on the fly. As for the finished product, there are a few lovely women in my life who would be very deserving of such a beautiful gift, especially the one who has taken on on the role of mother and grandmother to me and my children. :)

  • Kathleen Crapse says:

I’d knit this kit and probably follow the pattern just for creative curiosity. Whether I kept it or gifted it would depend on what was going on at the time it was completed. Might even use it as a Prayer Shawl.

Thanks for your generosity in offering this kit to us.

  • Reta says:

I would love to win the knitted shawl kit. What a wonderful contest. Thanks for offering it to us.
