I love textured stitches like bobbles, popcorns, and bullions, and I enjoy designing with diagonal stitch patterns. The combination of bobbles, diagonals, and the mercerized cotton make this a striking clutch!

Diagonal Bobbles Clutch Crochet Pattern

This sturdy, textured clutch is a simple to make, yet elegant, accessory. Customize the look with different button sizes or shapes.
Finished Size: 8.5″ (21.5 cm) wide by 5” (12.75 cm) when closed.
Materials:
- Galler Yarns Parisian Cotton (100% mercerized cotton, 10 oz/285 g/1090 yd/997 m) – 1 cone 6090 Vert, or approximately 530 yd (485 m) in any size 3 mercerized cotton thread
- E/4 3.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
- Yarn needle
- Button
Gauge: 22 sts in pattern = 4” (10 cm) across. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern:
- BL – back loop only
- bob – bobble – (Yo, insert hook in st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops) 5 times in the same st, yo and draw through all 6 loops on hook.
- ch – chain
- ea – each
- rep – repeat
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- st(s) – sts
- yo – yarn over
- * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
Pattern notes:
- Hold 2 strands of thread together throughout to create a dense fabric that holds its shape.
- The clutch is crocheted flat in one piece. A simple edging is crocheted in the round to make assembly easier.
Pattern Instructions
Button band
- With two strands of cotton thread held together, ch 46.
- Row 1: Turn, sk 1 ch, sc in second ch and in ea ch across. (45 sts)
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in ea st across.
- Row 3: Turn, ch 1, scBL in ea st across.
- Rep Rows 2 & 3 until button band is slightly wider than your button’s diameter, ending after Row 3.
Diagonal Bobble Pattern
- Row 4: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, *bob in next st, sc in ea of next 5 sts; rep from * across to last 2 sts, bob in next st, sc in last st.
- Row 5: Rep Row 3.
- Row 6: Turn, ch 1, sc in ea of first 2 sts, bob in next st, *sc in ea of next 5 sts, bob in next st; rep from * across to last 6 sts, sc in ea of next 6 sts.
- Row 7: Rep Row 3.
- Row 8: Turn, ch 1, sc in ea of first 3 sts, bob in next st, *sc in ea of next 5 sts, bob in next st; rep from * across to last 5 sts, sc in ea of next 5 sts.
- Row 9: Rep Row 3.
- Row 10: Turn, ch 1, sc in ea of first 4 sts, bob in next st, *sc in ea of next 5 sts, bob in next st; rep from * across to last 4 sts, sc in ea of next 4 sts.
- Row 11: Rep Row 3.
- Row 12: Turn, ch 1, *sc in ea of next 5 sts, bob in next st; rep from * across to last 3 sts, sc in ea of next 3 sts.
- Row 13: Rep Row 3.
- Rep Rows 4-13 until clutch measures approximately 9” (23 cm) from end of button band, ending after Row 13.
Closure
- Row 14: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st across.
- Row 15: Rep Row 3.
- Rows 16-19: Rep Rows 14 & 15 twice.
- Row 20: Rep Row 14 once.
Shape buttonhole
- Row 21: Turn, ch 1, scBL in ea of first 21 sts, ch 3, sk 3 sts, scBL in ea of next 21 sts. (42 sc, 3 ch)
Edging
- Round 1: Turn, ch 1, sc in first and ea st across (including sc and chs) to last st of row, 3 sc in last st, *turn to work across side, (sc in edge of ea row across to last row, 3 sc in edge of last row),** turn to work in unworked side of foundation ch, (sc in ea st across foundation ch to last st, 3 sc in last st); repeat from * to ** once, join with sl st to first sc of edging. Fasten off.
Assembly & Finishing
- Spray block finished piece (optional).
- Fold together inside out (with bobble sides facing each other). Line up button band with button hole and closure. Pin in place.
- Using approximately 1 yd (1 m) of cotton thread, thread yarn needle for sewing with thread doubled over.
- Starting on one edge and matching stitches on each side of fold, whipstitch side closed by inserting needle into the outer loop of each side. Repeat on other edge to sew closed.
- Fasten off. Weave in yarn tails.
- Turn clutch out so that bobbles are on the outside. Line up button with button hole. Using one strand of cotton thread, sew button hole to button band. Weave in yarn tails.
