Picnic Basket Shawl Crochet-a-Long Week 4

Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

This week’s clue includes the final row and finishing instructions.

Finished Size

Adult: 48” (122 cm) wingspan x 12” (30.5 cm) width unblocked; 52” (132 cm) wingspan x 16” (40.5 cm) width blocked.

Materials

- Malabrigo Yarn Sock (3.5 oz/100 g/440 yds/402 m/100% superwash Merino wool) – 2 skeins 120 Lotus, or approximately 770 yds/704 m in any super fine weight yarn.
- US Size E-4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook or any size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle.
1 motif in pattern = 3” (7.5 cm) wide unblocked. Exact gauge is not critical for this project. Gauge is measured across widest point of motif in Row 5 or Row 8.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

ch – chain
cl – cluster – (Yo, insert hook in st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops) twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
dc – double crochet
ea – each
rep – repeat
sc – single crochet
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
t-ch – turning chain
yo – yarn over
* Rep instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Instructions

Shawl

Row 40: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, (sc in next st, 4 sc in ch-5 sp) twice, *sc in next st, (dc in next st, ch 1, skip ch-1 sp) 4 times, dc in next st,** (sc in next st, 4 sc in ch-5 sp) 5 times; rep from * across, ending last rep at ** with 2 ch-5 sps remaining, (sc in next st, 4 sc in ch-5 sp) twice, sc in next st, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in second ch of t-ch. Fasten off.

Finishing

You can always block more, but you can’t block less! For that reason, I recommend that blocking newbies start with spray blocking, which is gentler and works for all fiber types.
Lay out your finished project on a blocking board or mat (or, in my case, pieces from a child’s play mat).
Starting at the midpoint, pin it with stainless steel/rust resistant T-pins or quilter’s pins at the top and bottom until the pineapples look the way you’d like.
Pin from the center out towards one side, making sure to keep edges even and to highlight the curves of the final row by arching it with pins.
You can also use blocking wires, which minimize the amount of pinning you need to do. I use Lazadas blocking wires, and you can read my review of them here.
Spray with cold water as you go along, to help the yarn stretch into position.
Then pin from the center towards the other side. You may need to adjust some pins as you go along.
Once you like the look of your blocked shawl, spray the entire project with cold water and let it dry naturally.
Once it is dry, carefully remove pins, and voila! Your shawl will be ready to wear.
