Crochet Pattern: Walking in the Sand Scarf

Walking in the Sand Scarf, free unisex #crochet pattern by Underground Crafter in Lion Brand ScarfieI hate to stereotype, because I know a lot of men who are adventurous dressers.

However.

Every man that is on my handmade gift list is more… shall we say… picky.

Walking in the Sand Scarf, free unisex #crochet pattern by Underground Crafter in Lion Brand ScarfieYou know what I mean.

The guys that will only wear handmade gifts that are in solid black yarn in single crochet or stockinette stitch.

But those aren’t the projects I love to make. I mean, my eyes and black yarn are no longer friends, first of all. And miles and miles of one stitch is sometimes too dull.

Walking in the Sand Scarf, free unisex #crochet pattern by Underground Crafter in Lion Brand ScarfieThis scarf combines my favorite stitch for the menfolk – I like to call it the pebble stitch – with one skein of Lion Brand Scarfie, a wonderful, self-striping yarn in plenty of dude approved colors. This colorway reminded me of the beach, and hence the name of this scarf pattern.

As evidence that this scarf is perfect for those picky guys (and everyone else who likes warm scarves), this is the email I received this morning from the dapper gentleman I gifted this scarf to last fall.

Just wanted to mention that I’ve received several compliments from people (well Ladies) on the beautiful scarf and hat you made for me.  I’ve sent them your blog.

Many thanks again.  They are keeping me warm this terribly cold week!

Is there any higher compliment a crafter can receive about a gift? Not only has it become the go-to cold weather scarf, but it’s also being admired by others.

My work here is done.

This pattern was originally published as part of my charity spotlight series of guest posts on Oombawka Design. It meets the donation requirements of the National WWII Museum’s Knit Your Bit program. 1. glad to know that my eyes and black yarn aren’t alone. I really wish my granddaughters liked bright colors. I think I will try your pattern with some yarn I bought recently. Thanks for the pattern.

  2. Your scarf is lovely, but I was very disappointed with Lion’s Scarfie yarn. Many weak spots where I found it necessary to cut the yarn, rip out a row so that I wouldn’t have knot in middle of work and also knots connecting yarn. I won’t be purchasing more Scarfie yarn.

    • sherri, thanks for your interest. The stitch combination (a short stitch next to a tall stitch) creates the texture that looks (to me) like pebbles. I don’t have this pattern available on YouTube, but you are welcome to look up each stitch used on YouTube if that would help. Or, you might try reading through the pattern more slowly and working on it without a video.
