Last week, I shared one of my favorite designs for those fussy menfolk, the Walking in the Sand Scarf. (And, by fussy, I actually mean un-fussy: the guys who only want the plain stuff.)

And, today I have another one! You may recall that my pattern for the Faux Mistake Rib Watchman’s Cap (in 8 sizes, from newborn through adult large) was one of the most popular free crochet patterns on the blog last year.

At some point along the way, someone asked if I would write up a scarf pattern to match it.

It was on the backburner until that crisis point in the holiday crafting season. (C’mon, you know what I’m talking about!) I was going to see my dear ole dad in just a few days and had spent a little too long on the hat I made for him.

Since I’m lucky enough to count the Lion Brand Yarn Studio among my favorite local New York City yarn shops, I brought the hat down the shop and held it up to a few skeins of Scarfie until I found one that matched.

With the bulky, self-striping yarn and the easy stitch pattern, the scarf came together in no time. It was a holiday miracle!

This stretchy scarf isn’t just for the fussy menfolk, of course. You could make one in adventurous colors for a dapper dude, a jaded teen, or pretty much anyone!

Bulky Faux Mistake Rib Scarf

Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

This beginner-friendly pattern makes a fabulously warm and stretchy unisex scarf.

 

Finished Size

• Adult: 59.5” (151 cm) long x 6” (15 cm) wide after blocking.

Materials

• Lion Brand Scarfie (5.3 oz/150 g/312 yds/285 m/100% acrylic) – 1 skein in 208 Oxford Claret, or approximately 312 yds (285 m) in any bulky weight yarn.
• US Size K-10.5 (6.5 mm) crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain gauge.
• Yarn needle.

Gauge

• 15 sts x 15 rows in pattern = 4” (10 cm) before blocking. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

• BL – back loop only
• ch – chain
• hdc – half double crochet
• rep – repeat
• sc – single crochet
• sl st – slip stitch
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• * Rep instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Notes

• Concerned about working with a long foundation chain? Read Easy Fixes for a Foundation Chain with Too Few or Too Many Chains.
• If substituting a solid yarn instead of self-striping yarn, change colors in the last yarn over of every second row to stripe. Carry unworked color up side.

Pattern Instructions

• Ch 216, or any even number of sts.
• Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, hdc in next ch, *sl st in next ch, hdc in next ch; rep from * across. (215 sts)
• Row 2: Turn, ch 1, slstBL in next st, *hdcBL in next st, slstBL in next st; rep from * across.
• Row 3: Turn, ch 1, hdcBL in next st, *slstBL in next st, hdcBL in next st; rep from * across.
• Rep Rows 2 & 3, ending after either row when scarf measures approximately 6” (15 cm) wide, or when desired length is reached.

Finishing

• With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails. Spray block if necessary.
