This is the fifth square in the Anthology Blanket Knit-a-Long. The Seed Stitch Boxes Square combines a familiar stitch pattern (the seed stitch) with a geometric shape (rectangle).

Free Knitting Pattern by Underground Crafter

02-easy 50US terms 504-medium 50This square combines a familiar stitch pattern (the seed stitch) with a geometric shape (rectangle).

Finished Size

  • 6″ (15 cm) square.

Materials

  • Cascade 220 Superwash (100% superwash wool), or approximately 41 yds (37.5 m) in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size 7/4.5 mm knitting needles, or any size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge

  • Completed square = 6″ (15 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BO – bind off
  • CO – cast on
  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • rep – repeat
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sl 1 – slip 1 st, knitwise
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • * Rep instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Note

  • Pattern repeat is any multiple of 8 sts. Instructions include 4 st borders.

Pattern Instructions

  • CO 32 sts.

Border

  • Row 1: Knit to last st, p1.
  • Row 2: Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
  • Rows 3 & 4: Rep Row 2 twice.

Seed Stitch Boxes pattern

  • Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, k4, *(k1, p1) 3 times, k2; rep from * to last 3 sts, k2, p1.
  • Row 2: Sl 1, k3, p1, *(p1, k1) 3 times,** p2; rep from * across, ending last rep at ** with 5 sts remaining, p1, k3, p1.
  • Rows 3-6: Rep Rows 1-2 twice.
  • Row 7: Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
  • Row 8: Sl 1, k3, p to last 4 sts, k3, p1.
  • Rep Rows 1-8 until square measures approximately 5.5 in (14 cm), ending after Row 6.

Border

  • Rows 1-4: Rep Border Row 2, 4 times.
  • BO in pattern for Border Row 2. Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 3 times the width of square).
