How to Make a No-Sew Liner for Crochet and Knit Bags on Underground Crafter | Do you love to crochet or knit bags but hate sewing? This photo tutorial will show you how to make a no-sew liner to make your projects more sturdy and durable.

I love crocheting bags but they don’t always stand up to the test of time without a liner. I rarely feel inspired to drag out the sewing machine to make a liner, and sometimes I just don’t have a fabric on hand that will work with the yarn I’ve chosen for my bag. In the past, I’ve felted my wool bags to tighten them up — check out my tutorial for easy felting in the washer and dryer for more details — but recently, I discovered another way for making a no-sew liner that I’m going to share with you today!

The best part about this method for making a no-sew liner is that it’s removable so you can wash — or even replace — the liner if you have a food spill or pen explosion in your bag.

Spoiler alert: This removable, no-sew liner is made using strips of Duck Color Duct Tape. Not only is it super easy to make, but it’s just as easy to wipe clean in case of a spill. You can also customize it easily since Duck has a broad range of colors and patterns available. (By the way, the free crochet pattern for the Striped Bag is available here.)

Supplies You’ll Need

In addition to your crochet or knit bag, you’ll need…

If your crochet or knit bag is made in pieces, wait to assemble the parts so you can more accurately measure the pieces of your liner. If your bag is already assembled, you’ll also need a ruler to measure the bag sections.

Make the No-Sew Liner

  • Using the full sized Duck tape (Winking White in the photos), lay down overlapping strips of tape with the sticky side UP in horizontal rows that are slightly wider than the shortest side of your bag panel or piece. It’s much easier to start with shorter strips (since longer strips can sometimes get twisted and stuck together). If your bag is already assembled, make the strips just wider than your measurements from the outside of the bag.
  • (Bonus tip: If you have long hair, like I do, tie it up before you get started!)

  • Once you have a set of horizontal strips that are slightly larger than your bag piece, lay strips of tape with the sticky side DOWN on top of those strips in vertical rows. Letting the tape cross in different directions makes the liner sturdier.

  • Once your tape is covered, trim three sides of the liner to fit your bag panels or pieces. Leave the top edge of the liner panels a little long since you’ll need to fold those later.
  • To trim the liner panel, place your bag piece on top of the liner panel and trim the liner panel with a scissor. (You can also use a pencil to draw an outline first and then cut around the outline.) Discard the excess tape.

  • Make additional liner panels the same way for each piece of your bag.
  • If your bag has a bottom gusset, cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside the gusset if you’d like to reinforce the bottom. Then, use Duck tape to cover the cardboard.

Assemble the Liner Panels

Once you have all of your liner pieces ready, you’ll join the liner panels together. I wanted mine to have a little flair, so I used Duck Ducklings Mini Duck Tape in Pink. You could use the same color as your liner instead.

  • Place the liner panels on top of each other. Place tape around the bottom edge first and fold it over so that the panels seal closed at the bottom. Next, place tape along the sides and fold the tape over so that the panels seal closed at the sides. (If you have a gusset, attach pieces together one at a time. Then, join the larger piece to another piece until all parts are connected.)
  • Trim away any excess tape. Fold the top edge of each panel over until it is the right size for your bag. (If you’ve sealed your sides up all the way, just use your scissor to cut open the edge of the tape slightly.)
  • Use a short piece of tape to hold the folded edge in place. Tape the folded edges down, wrapping the tape around both sides of the liner and trimming away any excess.

  • Add a key chain clip by taping it securely to the seam.

  • You can also add Duck tape pockets on the inside of the liner for your phone or other favorite items.

Insert the Liner into Your Bag

Insert the liner into the bag, trimming and adjusting if necessary.

  2. Duct tape! What a great idea. I’m going to try this on my many “unlined” bags I’ve made! I’m going to add something to my idea though. I’m going to apply the tape to a piece of cardstock hoping it will be easier to control the tape. We shall see if that was a good brainstorm or not. Has anyone else tried that?
