Dishcloths and washcloths are great ways to try out new stitches while making something useful! I use crocheted washcloths for exfoliating and they also make great gifts when paired with homemade or store bought bath and body products.

I recommend using 100% cotton yarns for these projects. Cotton is breathable, easy care (though it does tend to shrink in the first washing), and safe for use in the kitchen near heat because it doesn’t melt when exposed to high temperatures.
