I love the lush red color of Redwood in Lion Brand Heartland Thick & Quick. (You get the same rich color in the worsted/medium weight version, too, by the way.) Since I only had a small amount of yarn left, I figured a hat was in order.

Over the years, our meetings became a little less frequent and slightly less crafty. When we met up over the summer, I needed something I could work on while chatting with them, and the Plain Ole Slouchy Hat was born! In the super bulky yarn, I was able to finish the Teen/Adult Small size version before our afternoon was over.

The hat is very gift-worthy, so I am sharing the pattern in 9 sizes from newborn through adult. There should be an option for everyone on your list, but if not, I’ve included instructions for customization. It’s a great match with the Coastal Redwood Super Scarf, if you’re looking for a gift set, though they do use different stitch patterns.

Free crochet pattern: Coastal Redwood Super Scarf in Lion Brand Heartland Thick & Quick by Underground Crafter | My inspiration for this super scarf pattern was the redwood, a species of super tall and long-lived tress that thrive in the Northern Coast of California. Like its namesake tree, this scarf is ultra long and will definitely be noticed. This luxuriously long scarf has a gentle, unisex texture made with a beginner-friendly stitch pattern. Both are the sort of patterns that intermediate crocheters can make while on “cruise control.” For adventurous beginners, don’t be afraid of this hat! Though it’s listed as intermediate, you are probably up to the challenge.
