Crochet pattern: Wow That Was Fast Cowl

As I mentioned last week, this is the time of year where I’m on the hunt for truly last-minute projects. These quickie projects make great gifts, donations, or just stress relievers during a busy time of year.

This post contains affiliate links. Yarn for the sample was generously provided by Red Heart.

I made this one-skein cowl in less time than needed for one direction of my commute with a skein of Red Heart Irresistible jumbo yarn, which is how I came up with the name.

Wow, That Was Fast Cowl, free crochet pattern in Red Heart Irresistible by Underground Crafter | Make this one-skein cowl in less than an hour with jumbo yarn! This pattern is designed to meet the donation requirements of CompassionKnit, a volunteer-led project that distributes handmade hats, scarves, cowls, and mittens/fingerless gloves to children and young adults who are homeless or living in foster care. The pattern is the last in this year’s Holiday Stashdown Crochet-a-Long (which you can learn more about here). It’s also part of my monthly charity spotlight series where I highlight an organization that accepts crochet or knit donations and share a free pattern, so read on for details!

December’s Featured Organization: CompassionKnit

UPDATE: CompassionKnit ceased operating on December 31, 2021. I have kept the post up, but removed links and addresses. CompassionKnit is a Ravelry group organized by KnitsterMonika in 2009. Monika is a trial attorney who coordinates donations of handmade hats, scarves, cowls, mittens, and fingerless mitts for San Francisco’s homeless teens and young adults, as well as children in foster care. Currently, CompassionKnit does not have 501(c)(3) status, but the donations are distributed to youth via organizations with 501(c)(3) status. (In other words, please consult your tax professional about whether shipping and other expenses related to your donation are considered tax deductible.)

Donations are accepted all year long and distributed to youth from newborns through 21 years old. Most recipients are teens and young adults living in foster care, group homes, or adolescent shelters. You can find out more about CompassionKnit in the Ravelry group (sign in required) or on Facebook or Instagram.

Tips for Making Great CompassionKnit Projects

While CompassionKnit does accept donations for children of all ages, most handmade projects go to teens and young adults. Homeless teens have most of the same concerns about how they look as teens living in stable housing. Wearing something handmade in favorite colors with contemporary styling can go a long way towards making a homeless teen feel loved and confident.

San Francisco is a port city in Northern California. Temperatures are often chilly and damp in the winter months and during evenings year round, so accessories that are cozy enough for extended outdoor wear are best. While CompassionKnit does not require that projects be made in easy care yarns, any items made with wool or yarns that require special care like hand washing or drying flat should be labeled.
