This week’s dishcloth features the garter rib stitch, one of my favorite ribbing variations. I’ve previously used it for this square in the Anthology Blanket and in the Garter Rib Beanie, which is available in 8 sizes. It makes a stretchy, reversible dishcloth.

This reversible stitch alternates stockinette with garter stitch columns.

Finished Size

  • 12″ (30.5 cm) square.

Materials

Gauge

  • 18 sts = 4″ (10 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BO – bind off
  • CO – cast on
  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • rep – repeat
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sl 1 – slip 1 st, knitwise
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • * Rep instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Note

  • The written pattern is available below the video tutorial.
  • Pattern repeat is any multiple of 4 sts, + 2. Instructions include 5 st borders on each side.

Pattern Instructions

  • CO 56 sts (or any multiple of 4 sts, + 2 for the edge + 10 for the borders).

Border

  • Border Row 1: Knit to last st, p1.
  • Border Row 2: Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
  • Border Rows 3 & 4: Rep Border Row 2 twice.

Garter Rib Stitch pattern

  • Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
  • Row 2: Sl 1, k4, p2, *k2, p2; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
  • Rep Rows 1 & 2 until dishcloth measures approximately 11.5″ (29 cm), ending after Row 2.

Border

  • Rows 1-4: Rep Border Row 2 four times.
  • BO in pattern for Border Row 2. Fasten off.

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in ends.
