This week’s dishcloth features the diagonal moss stripe. This is a traveling stitch pattern with a 14-row repeat, so it does require a little more focus than my previous dishcloths, but the results are worth it. I previously used this stitch pattern for the Diagonal Moss Stripe Square for the Anthology Blanket.

Diagonal Moss Stripe 12″ (30.5 cm) Dishcloth

Knitting Pattern by Underground Crafter

This traveling stitch pattern creates an eye popping texture. A video tutorial is available at the end of the pattern.

Finished Size

• 12″ (30.5 cm) square.

Materials

• Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton (100% mercerized cotton, 3.5 oz/100 g/186 yd/170 m) – 1 skein in 147 Purple, or approximately 138 yd (126 m) in any medium weight, cotton yarn.
• US Size 7/4.5 mm knitting needles, or any size needed to obtain gauge. (I used my Denise2Go Knitting for the Cure set for the sample.)
• Yarn needle.

Gauge

• 18 sts = 4″ (10 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

• BO – bind off
• CO – cast on
• k – knit
• p – purl
• rep – repeat
• RS – right (front) side
• sl 1 – slip 1 st, knitwise
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• * Rep instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Note

• A video tutorial is available at the end of the pattern.
• Pattern repeat is any multiple of 12 sts. Instructions include 5 st borders on each side.
• I love this stitch pattern so much that I didn’t include a top and bottom border. However, I know that you may want this dishcloth to “match” the others in my patterns, so I have included instructions with and without borders.

Pattern Instructions

• CO 58 sts (or any multiple of 12 sts + 10 for the borders).
• If working without a top and bottom borders, continue to Diagonal Moss Stripe stitch pattern.

Border

• Border Row 1: Knit to last st, p1.
• Border Row 2: Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
• Border Rows 3 & 4: Rep Border Row 2 twice.

Diagonal Moss Stripe stitch pattern

• Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, k4, *p1, k5, p1, k2, p1, k1, p1; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 2: Sl 1, k4, *p1, k1, p3, k2, p4, k1; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 3: Sl 1, k4, *p1, k3, p1, k1, p1, k4, p1; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 4: Sl 1, k4, *p5, k2, p1, k1, p2, k1; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 5: Sl 1, k4, *k2, (p1, k1) twice, p1, k5; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 6: Sl 1, k4, *p6, (k1, p1) 3 times; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 7: Sl 1, k4, *(p1, k1) twice, p1, k7; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 8: Sl 1, k4, *p5, k1, p2, k1, p1, k2; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 9: Sl 1, k4, *p1, k1, p1, k3, p2, k4; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 10: Sl 1, k4, *p3, k1, p1, k1, p4, k2; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 11: Sl 1, k4, *p1, k5, p2, k1, p1, k2; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 12: Sl 1, k4, *(p1, k1) 3 times, p6; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 13: Sl 1, k4, *k7, (p1, k1) twice, p1; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• Row 14: Sl 1, k4, *(p1, k1) twice, p7, k1; rep from * across to last 5 sts, k4, p1.
• If working with a top border, repeat Rows 1-14 until square measures approximately 11.5″ (29 cm), ending after any even row. Continue on to Border instructions.
• If you’re not including a top border, repeat Rows 1-14 until square measures approximately 12″ (30.5 cm), ending after any even row. BO in pattern for Border Row 2. Continue on to Finishing instructions.

Border

• Rows 1-4: Rep Border Row 2 four times.
• BO in pattern for Border Row 2. Fasten off.

Finishing

• With yarn needle, weave in ends.
