The In the Neighborhood Keyhole Scarf works up quickly because it’s much shorter than a traditional scarf, but you can still wrap it snuggly around your neck for maximum warmth. Keyhole scarves are an important part of my handmade gift closet. (If you don’t have a handmade gift closet yet, you can find my tips for starting one along with a roundup of free crochet patterns here.) They don’t use up as much yarn as traditional scarves, so they work really well for sets, too.

This particular keyhole scarf uses some great textures made from simple stitches.

Oh, and did I mention that keyhole scarves are great if you have to mail a gift because they fold up very small so you can save on postage.

Finished Size

• Teen/Adult: 5.25” (13.5 cm) width x 26” (66 cm) length.

Materials

• Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Worsted yarn (100% washable Merino wool, 8 oz/228 g/400 yd/366 m) – 1 skein in Canton (MC), or approximately 187 yd (171 m) in any medium weight yarn.
• Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Worsted yarn (100% washable Merino wool, 2 oz/60 g/105 yd/96 m) – 1 mini skein in Thomas Circle (CC), or approximately 22 yd (20 m) in any medium weight yarn.
• US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
• Yarn needle.

Gauge

• 14 sts = 4” (10 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

• CC – Coordinating Color
• ch – chain
• dc – double crochet
• MC – Main Color
• sc – single crochet
• sk – skip
• sl st – slip stitch
• sp – space
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• * + Repeat the instructions following the asterisk or plus sign as indicated.
• () Instructions within parenthesis are worked into indicated stitch or space.
• [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

Pattern Notes

• Scarf is crocheted flat in rows.
• On Row 3, work over ch-1 sp and draw up first loop of dc to same height as current row.

Pattern Instructions

Patterned edge

• With CC, ch 20.
• Row 1: Turn, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch and each ch across, changing to MC in last yarn over of final sc. (19 sts)
• Row 2: Turn, ch 4 (counts as dc + ch-1 sp, here and throughout), sk next st, dc in next st, *ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in next st; rep from * across, changing to CC in last yarn over of final dc. (10 dc + 9 ch-1 sp)
• Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc in same st, *dc in skipped st from previous row, sc in next st; rep from * across, changing to MC in last yarn over of final sc. (19 sts)
• Rows 4-7: Rep Rows 2-3 twice or until scarf measures 2” (5 cm) from start.
• Row 8: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, *dc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * across.
• Row 9: Turn, ch 3 (counts as dc, here and throughout), *sc in next st, dc in next st; rep from * across.
• Rep Rows 8-9 until scarf measures approximately 5” (13 cm) from start, ending after Row 8.

Form keyhole – first side

• Row 10a: Turn, ch 3, [sc in next st, dc in next st] 3 times, sc in next st. (8 sts)
• Rep Row 10a until keyhole measures approximately 2” (5 cm) from start of Row 10, fasten off.

Form keyhole – second side

• Row 10b: Sk 3 unworked sts on Row 10, join MC with sl st to next st, ch 1, sc in same st, [dc in next st, sc in next st] 3 times, dc in next st. (8 sts)
• Row 11: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, [dc in next st, sc in next st] 3 times, dc in next st.
• Rep Row 11 until second side of keyhole is the same number of rows as first side of keyhole.

Close keyhole

• Row 12: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, (dc in next st, sc in next st] 3 times, dc in next st, ch 3, sk keyhole opening, [dc in next st, sc in next st] 4 times.
• Row 13: Turn, ch 3, [sc in next st, dc in next st] 3 times, sc in next st, (dc, sc, dc) in ch-3 sp, [sc in next st, dc in next st] 4 times.

Work even in pattern

• Rep Rows 8-9 until scarf measures approximately 24” (61 cm), ending after either Row and changing to CC in last yarn over of final st.

Patterned edge

• Row 14: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st and each st across, changing to MC in last yarn over of final sc.
• Rows 15-20: Rep Rows 2-3, 3 times or until scarf measures 2” (5 cm) from start of Row 14. Fasten off.

Finishing

• With yarn needle, weave in ends.
