Crochet Pattern: Bambina Beanie

Free crochet pattern: Bambina Beanie in Lion Brand Heartland by Underground Crafter | A small shell stitch adds a delicate touch to this newborn beanie. This pattern meets donation requirements for CLICK for Babies, a campaign against infant abuse. This easy beanie pattern uses a small shell stitch to add a delicate touch because it is sized just for newborns! I designed the Bambina Beanie to meet the donation requirements for CLICK for Babies, a campaign against infant abuse. If you’d like to get involved by sending a newborn hat to a participating organization in the U.S. and Canada by September 30, read on for details! This post is part of my charity spotlight series, where I spotlight a charity that distributes crochet projects and share a free pattern suitable for donation to that organization.

July’s Featured Charity: CLICK for Babies

CLICK for Babies is a North American campaign to raise awareness of shaking babies in a unique and interesting way. Shaken baby syndrome is a term used to describe the devastating effects of shaking a baby. It is the leading cause of death in child abuse cases in the United States, and if the child survives, there may be extensive head trauma that leads to poor health outcomes later in life.

One reason that parents shake babies is due to unsoothable crying during “the Period of PURPLE Crying” (when the baby is from two weeks to four months of age). The PURPLE acronym highlights the main features of crying during this period of life.

  • Peak of Crying
  • Unexpected
  • Resists Soothing
  • Pain-Like Face
  • Long Lasting
  • Evening

CLICK for Babies aims to use cute purple hats to remind parents of education they have received at the hospital about the normalcy of this period of life, methods of dealing with the stress it causes to parents, and the dangers of shaking a baby. Purple hats are collected at sites in the U.S. and Canada through September 30 each year for distribution in November and December. You can find a distribution location near you using the buttons and interactive map here.

How To Make a Great Newborn Hat

Newborn hats should be made with a soft yarn that feels gentle to the touch. Yarns should be easy care, meaning they should be washable and dryable in a machine. I chose Lion Brand Heartland for this project because it’s soft, washes well, comes in a large skein, and is available in many colors. (With one skein, you could make four or five hats in this pattern.)

CLICK for Babies hats should fit one to two day old babies. Hats should fit 13″ (33 cm) to 15″ (38 cm) circumference and 4″ (10 cm) to 6″ (15 cm) tall. Since hundreds of collected hats each year are not donated because they are too small or too large, CLICK for Babies recommends you check the fit. More information is available in their sizing guidelines.

For safety reasons, hats should not include decorative features which could present a choking or strangulation hazard, such as pom poms, tassels, buttons, or bows.

For the CLICK for Babies campaign, hats should also be at least 50% purple to remind parents of the period of purple crying. You can find more tips in the Click for Babies crafting guidelines.
