Wavy Navy Afghan

Crochet Pattern by J Crochet

I made this patriotic flag for my nephew, whose parents are both in the Navy. But this would look great in any color combo!

Finished size:

• 30.5 x 43 in (77 x 109 cm) unblocked

Gauge:

• H (5) hook: 13 dc stitches = 4 in (10 cm)
• 6 rows = 3.75 in (9.5 cm)

Level of difficulty:

• Easy

Materials:

• Crochet hook: H (5 mm)
• Tapestry needle optional (for weaving in ends)

Yarn:

• Caron Simply Soft (100% acrylic) – 2 skeins in ea color
• Medium 4 weight
• Dark Country Blue
• Harvest Red
• White

Abbreviations used:

• ch – chain
• dc – double crochet
• ea – each
• hdc – half double crochet
• sc – single crochet
• sk – skip
• sl st – slip stitch
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• tog – together
• tr – treble crochet
• x times (as in 2x = two times)
• yo – yarn over
• [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated

The afghan

• Foundation chain: Begin with blue. Pattern is multiple of 14+1. (For this afghan, I chained 141.)
• Row 1: Ch 1, turn, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, [hdc in each of next 2 ch, dc in each of next 2 ch, tr in each of next 3 ch, dc in each of next 2 ch, hdc in each of next 2 ch, sc in each of next 3 ch], repeat pattern ending with 2 sc. (141 st) Note: I work the first row in the back bumps of the chain. This makes it easy to add the border.

• Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Switch to red.

• Row 3: Ch 3 (works as first tr in row), turn, working in back loop only, sk first st, tr in next st, [dc in each of next 2 st, hdc in each of next 2 st, sc in each of next 3 st, hdc in each of next 2 st, dc in each of next 2 st, tr in each of next 3 st], repeat pattern, ending with 2 tr.

• Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Switch to white.

• Row 5: Ch 1, turn, working in back loop only, sc in next 2 st, [hdc in each of next 2 ch, dc in each of next 2 ch, tr in each of next 3 ch, dc in each of next 2 ch, hdc in each of next 2 ch, sc in next 3 ch], repeat pattern ending with 2 sc.

• Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Switch to blue.

• Rows 7-36: Repeat rows 3-6, alternating colors at the end of each even row.

The border

• Border Round 1: Continuing in white, ch 1, turn, working in back loop only, sc in same st, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 2 st, [hdc in back loop of next 3 ch, dc in back loop of next 3 ch, hdc in back loop of next 3 ch, sc in back loop of next 5 ch], repeat pattern ending row with 3 sc, ch 1, sc in same stitch. Working down side, [sc in end of each sc row, 3 sc in ea tr] to end of side. Sc in back loop only of first stitch in foundation ch, ch 1, dc in back loop of same st, dc in back loop in next st, [hdc in back loops of next 3 st sc in back loop of next 5 st, hdc in back loops of next 3 st, dc in back loops of next 3 st] across, ending with 2 dc, ch 1, sc in back loop of same st. Working down side, [3 sc in each ch, sc in end of each sc row] to end of side, sl st in first sc, fasten off.

• Border Round 2: With red and right side facing, join in any sc, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each sc around. In each corner ch: (sc, ch 1, sc). Fasten off.

• Border Round 3: With blue and right side facing, join in any sc, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each sc around. In each corner ch: (sc, ch 1, sc). Fasten off.

Candy Cane border

• Candy Cane Border 1: Attach blue in any st with sc, ch 5, remove hook. Attach red in next st with sc, ch 5, remove hook. Attach white in next st with sc, ch 5, remove hook.

• Candy Cane Border 2: Insert hook in last ch of blue chain, bringing chain to front, sc in next open st, ch 5, remove hook.

• Candy Cane Border 3: Insert hook in last ch of red chain, bringing chain to front, sc in next open st, ch 5, remove hook.

• Candy Cane Border 4: Insert hook in last ch of white chain, bringing chain to front, sc in next open st, ch 5, remove hook.

• Candy Cane Border 5: Continue around, alternating colors. End with sl st in first sc of each color.
