Crochet Pattern: The Wripple Blanket

Free crochet pattern: The Wripple Blanket in Red Heart Super Saver and Red Heart Super Saver Stripes by Underground Crafter | This easy peasy blanket features stretched, W-shaped ripples. The Wripple Blanket is an easy peasy blanket that features stretched, W-shaped ripples. It’s a perfect ripple project for beginners because there are no difficult decreases and it uses a one-row repeat. It’s also a great “mindless” project for more experienced crocheters. (In fact, I made my version while binge-watching some streaming shows.)

In case you’re wondering, no, the name isn’t a typo. It’s just that this particular ripple pattern looks a lot like a stretched out W, don’t you think?

Let me backtrack to tell you the story of this blanket. Months ago, the nice folks at Red Heart sent me a new yarn to try out, Red Heart Super Saver Stripes. They just happened to pick out a colorway that I loved at first sight, called Cool Stripes. It reminded me of Caribbean waters. As a New Yorker, I don’t have much opportunity to actually see Caribbean waters. Locally, I see much more greens, either on the rare instance when I visit the beach to see the Atlantic Ocean, or in the various rivers in the area. I decided to combine Paddy Green, a solid color in Red Heart Super Saver, with the Cool Stripes into a soothing, water-inspired lap blanket… for me.

I know the idea of making a gift for myself at this time of year is almost revolutionary (smile), but I’ve been working on The Wripple Blanket a little at a time for several months. I did finish most of it in the last week or so while watching some of my favorite shows on Netflix, though.

For my version, I just crocheted each part until I ran out of yarn and then changed colors. You can change up the striping pattern for a scrappy look, or to make the entire pattern in one colorway. The pattern is just a one-row repeat, so it’s easy to remember, and there are no complicated decreases. Instead, you just skip stitches.

It’s the right size for covering my legs while I’m watching tv, but you can adjust the length by adding more rows.
