Crochet Pattern: Chunky Double V-Stitch Hat

Though I tend to crochet unisex hats for my handmade gift closet so I can decide later who to gift them to, once in a while, I make a more feminine crochet hat to keep or to gift to someone special. For this hat, I combined a chunky yarn with one of my favorite, easy lacy stitches to make a feminine beanie topped with a bobble “pom pom.”

A few months ago, I was sent some of Craftsy’s (relatively) new yarn, Sprightly Acrylic Super Bulky, to try. I had quite a few project ideas but I kept coming back to the idea of a hat.

I’ve been burned by single skeins of super bulky yarn before. And, by “burned,” I mean that I’ve lost that game of yarn chicken. I had to stop my project at the last row, or pull it back and add stripes, or give up entirely.

For this hat, I actually won that game of yarn chicken, but barely. (As in, I didn’t have to “fasten off” because there was no yarn left after the last stitch.) If you’re less daring than I was, may I suggest getting 2 skeins of Sprightly Acrylic Super Bulky for your version of the Chunky Double V-Stitch Hat?

The double v-stitch is one of my favorite, classic crochet combinations, and it combines well with this yarn. I didn’t have enough yarn for a pom pom at the end, so I designed a creative decrease that forms bobbles for the top. It’s much more secure, too, if you have the tendency to lose your pom poms after a few washings.

This chunky, feminine hat works up quickly from headband to crown.

Finished Size

  • Teen/Adult: 21” (53.5 cm) hat circumference x 7.5” (19 cm) height.

PLEASE NOTE: I used exactly 1 skein of yarn for this project, so if your gauge is different than mine, you will run out before finishing. That’s why I recommend getting 2 skeins of yarn just in case.

    • I love the term too and so afraid I will lose. It is as frightening as the though to playing strip poker lol. I don’t gamble.
