Knitter’s Pride Nova Cubics Platina Interchangeable Knitting Needles review

Knitter's Pride Nova Cubics Platina Interchangeable Knitting Needles review by Underground CrafterShortly after I first started knitting in 2010, I fell in love with metal circular needles. I found them so much easier to knit with than almost any other type of needle.

But then, in 2013, I adopted these two cuties.

BondCappucchinoYou may remember that it wasn’t so cute when the one on the right bit me and punctured a finger on my right hand. (Spoiler alert: He’s finally settled in and is not a violent badness any more — just a regular bad putty.) After that, I found that metal needles were much less comfortable on my hands, and I tried a few things until I settled on bamboo and wood for straights and Knitter’s Pride Karbonz Interchangeables for circulars.

When I got a set of Knitter’s Pride Nova Cubics Platina Interchangeables to review through Stitchcraft Marketing, I decided to give metal needles a try again. And, I’m really glad that I did!

First, let me tell you the basic information about this set.

  • The Nova Cubics Platina needles have a hollow brass pipe core that’s plated with chrome.
  • As the name suggests, they have a cubic shape with sharp, tapered tips.
  • The cords are smooth and easy to connect. They tighten firmly with the cord keys.
  • Each set includes
    • 7 pairs of needles in sizes US 6 (4 mm), US 7 (4.5 mm), US 8 (5 mm), US 9 (5.5 mm), US 10 (6 mm), US 10.5 (6.5 mm), and US 11 (8 mm),
    • 4 cords that form needles of 24″, 32″ (2), and 40″ when connected,
    • A set of cord connectors that can be used to extend the cord lengths (as in the picture below),
    • 8 end caps (so you can have 4 sets of “straight” needles from this set at at a time), and
    • 4 cord keys.

The cord connectors (pictured at center) can be used to make a seriously long set of circular needles.

What I like about the Nova Cubics Platina set:

  • Even though the needles are chrome plated, the cubic shape makes them much easier on the hands than most metal needles. I found it easy to maintain a comfortable grip and get even tension.
  • The way the tips are tapered makes it easy to form stitches without having to rely on my finger pads so much. Unlike with other sharp-point metal needles, I didn’t feel like I needed a thimble when knitting since I never really needed to contact the point with my fingers.
  • At the same time, the sharp points made it easier for me to maneuver and execute even complex stitch patterns.
  • The case keeps everything organized so I haven’t lost any needles.
  • The cord key actually works to tighten the cords so they don’t unravel while I’m knitting.

What might take some getting used to:

  • I’ve been using cubic needles for years, but knitters who are new to cubic needles make need some time to adjust to the shape.
  • Needle sizes are etched into each needle, but I wish the color was darker. It’s difficult to see the sizes in low light conditions.

Overall, I highly recommend the Knitter’s Pride Nova Cubics Platina Interchangeables to knitters who like metal needles, knitters who want to get a solid but affordable set of interchangeable needles, and knitters who like the precision of metal but have hand issues that would benefit from the ergonomic, cubic shape. If they aren’t available at your local yarn shop, you can buy the set on Amazon.
