I love buying yarn and getting yarn but at some point, we have just too much yarn around. That’s when I love making scrappy projects that really eat through some of the leftovers so I can feel totally justified in getting some new yarn.

I’ve always been a big fan of ripple patterns, and the Scrappy Ripple Scarf crochet pattern uses one of my favorite double crochet ripple stitch combinations. I used five colors for my version, but you could use nine or even more in your version! The Pattern Notes shares= tips for changing the size (to be longer, shorter, wider, or narrower) and the Materials lets you know how much yarn you’ll need to go even scrappier than I did!

This post is part of the Countdown to Christmas I’m sharing with folks signed up for the Crochet Along updates and the Underground Crafter newsletter.

Scrappy Ripple Scarf

Ripple Scarf Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

This scrappy ripple scarf crochet pattern is a great way to use up your yarn stash while making a gender-neutral project that really pops!

Finished Size

  • Teen/Adult: 6” (15 cm) wide x 69” (175.5 cm) long.

Materials

  • 1 skein of medium weight yarn in each of 5 colors, or approximately 100 yds (91.5 m) in CA (shown in Cascade 220 yarn in 4010 Straw), 90 yds (82.5 m) each in CB (shown in Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool yarn), CC (shown in Tahki Yarns Donegal Tweed yarn), and CD (shown in a discontinued yarn), and 45 yds (41 m) in CE (shown in Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool yarn in 126K Nature’s Brown).
  • For a more scrappy/random color variation, you will need approximately 55 yds (50.5 m) for the foundation chain and foundation row, and 45 yds (41 m) for each additional row.
  • US J-10/6 mm crochet hook or any size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • 1 pattern repeat = 3.75” (9.5 cm) across.  Exact gauge is not critical for project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop in crochet here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • CD – Color D
  • CE – Color E
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc3tog – double crochet 3 stitches together (decrease) – [Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] 3 times, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook. Lindsey Stephens has a helpful video tutorial for this stitch here.
  • rep – repeat
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat stitches after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • I used 100% wool yarns for this project, and I made it a bit longer than most of my scarf patterns in case the recipient machine washed and dried (and shrunk) it.
  • To make scarf longer or shorter, add or subtract multiples of 14 sts from the foundation chain. To make scarf narrower or wider, reduce or continue the repeats of Row 2 (changing colors as desired).
  • Change colors in the last yarn over of indicated rows and crochet over your yarn tails. The video tutorial below demonstrates how to do this.
