After going through the whirlwind of holiday crafting, I want to settle into simple crochet projects for me.

Another thing that happens in January (at least in New York City) is that it gets cold and I occasionally entertain fantasies about the awesomeness of summer. (Don’t talk to me about that topic in August, though, because by then I’m exhausted by the oppressive humidity.)

The colors really reminded me of taking a stroll on the beach, and that’s how I came up with the name for this shawl.

You can choose your striping sequence, you can decide how long to make each panel, and you can stop at any point (or continue on) to make the panels smaller or larger. I used the same striping sequence for the outer panels and reversed it for the middle panel to keep things interesting.

This rectangular shawl uses a variation on the traditional granny square pattern. It’s easy to adapt the pattern to your favorite size. The stitch pattern allows for a bit of air flow so you don’t get too hot when wearing it.

Finished Size

  • Adult: 14”​ ​(​35.5​​ ​cm)​ ​spine​ ​x​ ​62.5”​ ​(​159​​ ​cm)​ ​wingspan​ ​(after​ ​blocking).

Materials

  • Cloudborn Superwash Merino Worsted Twist yarn​ ​(100% superwash Merino wool, 3.5 oz/100 g/221 yd/202 m) – 2 skeins ea in 14-013 Sky Blue (CA), 14-018 Ocean (CB), and 14-002 Taupe Heather (CC), or approximately 336 yd (307 m) in ea of 3 colors in any​ medium​ ​weight​ ​yarn.
  • US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • 1 panel = 14” (35.5 cm) x 19.5” (49.5 cm) after blocking. Exact​ ​gauge​ ​is​ ​not critical​ ​for​ ​this​ ​pattern.
