Materials:

  • 4.5mm hook
  • 2.5mm hook
  • 9”x12” (23 cm x 30.5 cm) piece of felt in desired color (for lining)
  • 1 skein Knit Picks Brava Sport in Cobblestone Heather (Color A)
  • 1 skein Knitpicks Brava Sport in Black (Color B)
  • 10g desired fingering/sock weight yarn for crocheting posies
  • A button
  • Pins, a needle, and thread for finishing
  • Beads or buttons for the centers of your flowers (optional)

Gauge:

  • With 4.5mm hook in pattern, 16 st x 12 rows = 4.5″ (11.5 cm)

Abbreviations:

  • BPdc = back post double crochet = Yo, insert hook from back around front to back of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops) twice. A video tutorial for this stitch is available here.
  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • FPdc = front post double crochet = Yo, insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops) twice. A video tutorial for this stitch is available here.
  • Rnd = Round
  • RS = right (front) side
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sp = space
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • WS = wrong (back) side
  • yo = yarn over

To Change Colors:

  • When working last dc of section with current working color, yo, place hook through st, yo and pull up a loop (making 3 loops on hook), yo and pull through 2 loops, drop working color and pick up new color, with new color yo and pull through last 2 loops of dc.

Pattern Note:

  • Do not cut yarn at color changes. Instead, carry it along as you progress, keeping unused thread and floats on the WS of work at all times by carrying yarn in front on WS rows and in back on RS rows. Also, be careful to keep floats below your stitches, particularly when working FPdc on WS and bp dc on RS, otherwise they will be seen on the RS of your work.

Pattern Instructions:

  • With color A and 4.5mm hook, make a base ch of 41 sts.

Weave Section Part 1:

  • Row 1: (WS) Sc in second ch from hook and evenly across. (40 sc.) Ch 2. Turn.

  • Row 3: (WS) Continuing with B, make 5 FPdc. Change to A. With A make 5 BPdc. *With B again, make 5 FPdc. Change once more to A and make 5 BPdc. Repeat from * twice more. Ch 2. Turn.
  • Row 4: (RS) *With A make 5 FPdc. Change to B. With B make 5 BPdc. Repeat from * 3x more. Change to A once more. Ch 2. Turn. Weave Section Part 1 Finished.

  • Rows 9 & 10: Repeat Rows 3 & 4. Weave Section Part 3 Finished.
  • Repeat Weave Sections 2 and 3 until piece measures approximately 12” (30.5 cm) long.
  • Last Row: With A, sc evenly across all 40 st, making 3 sc in last st. Rotate work counterclockwise and sc evenly along side edge, making 3 sc into the last corner. Rotate again and sc across bottom of work, once more making 3 sc into last st. Rotate and work up the other side, completing the sc border. 2 sc in same st as first sc of border. Sl st to join.

Assembly:

  • Finish off and weave in ends. Lay your piece of felt onto the WS of your crocheted fabric. Pin in place, and sew their edges together using your needle and thread. If prefered, you could use a sewing machine for this part, or even hot glue if you like.
  • Once your crocheted fabric is lined with the felt, and with the felt side facing you, fold the bottom 4” (10 cm) up and sew the edges of your wallet together, forming a pocket. The remaining top 4” (10 cm) section is now your wallet closure flap.
  • Sew your button onto the outside of the pocket, closer to the top edge if you want more space when it’s closed or closer to the bottom if you prefer a slimmer clutch.
  • Attach color A to the middle of the edge of your wallet closure flap, make a chain long enough to fit around your button snuggly but not so tightly that it will be a struggle for you, and sl st back into the same place you joined, forming a button loop. Finish off and weave in ends.
