Crochet Pattern: Arruga Stitch Hat in 3 Sizes

Arruga Stitch Hat, free crochet pattern in Red Heart Colorscape yarn by Underground CrafterThe Arruga Stitch Hat is a crochet pattern for a textured, unisex beanie in three sizes. It’s adorned with a pom pom (because why not!) and it uses a self-striping yarn to make the colorwork easy. I named the hat after the stitch tutorial I got the idea from, which is linked as a video tutorial in the pattern.

As you may have noticed, it’s hat season around here. I’ve been crocheting hats like mad since August! I love to crochet hats because they work up relatively quickly, so there’s that (almost) instant satisfaction, they are functional, and they are great ways to try out new stitch combinations.

Arruga Stitch Hat, free crochet pattern in Red Heart Colorscape yarn by Underground Crafter | on Marie, looking upWhen I was at In the MKNG a few weeks ago, I got to try a new-to-me (and also kind of newish) yarn, Red Heart Colorscape. It’s a soft acrylic self-striping yarn on the chubbier side of medium weight. It has a look that’s similar to a hand-painted yarn and each of the 12 colorways is named after a city. Since I haven’t had the chance to visit most of the cities on the list, I decided the yarn was going to be my vacation! (To be fair, I have had the pleasure of going to four of the cities, Barcelona, Dublin, Paris, and Rome, back in the 1990s.)

Arruga Stitch Hat, free crochet pattern in Red Heart Colorscape yarn by Underground Crafter | flat lay on tableI have been really going wild with half double crochet lately, which is my favorite stitch, but I felt that I needed to change things up a bit for this hat since I am planning to gift it for the holidays. Since I was away from home and my vast collection of stitch guides, I stopped over to New Stitch A Day and looked for some inspiration there. I found a tutorial for what Johnny called the Arruga Stitch and I thought it would go perfectly with this yarn. I love how it turned out, and I hope you do, too!
