As an example, in 1997, I took a trip to Europe to visit several countries. My checked bag, stuffed with 30 days worth of clothing and toiletries, never made it. (I ended up learning a valuable lesson about packing, though.)

Back in 2014, I designed several patterns for I Like Crochet magazine as it launched. This long and cuddly unisex scarf was one of those patterns, but somehow the sample got lost.

Chevron Shell Scarf

Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

A classic chevron stitch in three colors adds the appearance of movement to this long, cozy scarf.

Finished Size

  • Adult: 5.5” (14 cm) wide x 67” (170 cm) long after blocking.

Materials

  • Imperial Yarn Erin yarn (100% wool, 4 oz/113 g/225 yd/206 m) – 1 skein ea in 01 Natural (CA), 326 Denim Dusk (CB), and 314 Chocolate (CC), or approximately 200 y (183 m) in ea of 3 colors in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • 13 sts & 8 rows in pattern = 4” (10 cm) before blocking. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc3tog – double crochet 3 sts together (decreases 2 sts) – *Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops; rep from * twice more, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
  • ea – each
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd – Round
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • Scarf is crocheted flat in rows across the long edge. For tips on working with a long foundation chain, read Easy Fixes for Foundation Chain with Too Few or Too Many Chains.
  • Border is crocheted in the round.
  • Change color at the end of every row in the last yo of final stitch of row.
  • Carry unworked yarn up the side when changing colors. Yarn tails will be covered by border.

Pattern Instructions

Scarf

  • With CA, ch 204 (or any multiple of 8 sts, + 4).
  • Row 1: Turn, sk 3 ch (counts as first dc), dc in next ch, *sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, sk 1 ch,** 3 dc in next ch; rep from * across to last st, ending final rep after **, 2 dc in last st, changing to CB in final yo of last dc. (201 sts)
  • Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 2, dc3tog, ch 2, sc in next st; rep from * across.
  • Row 3: Turn, ch 3 (counts as dc, here and throughout), dc in first st, *sk ch-2 sp, sc in next st, sk ch-2 sp,** 3 dc in next; rep from * across to last st, ending last rep after **, 2 dc in last st, changing to CA in final yo of last dc.
  • Row 4: Rep Row 2.
  • Row 5: Rep Row 3, changing to CC in final yo of last dc.
  • Row 6: Rep Row 2.
  • Row 7: Rep Row 3.
  • Row 8: Rep Row 2.
  • Row 9: Rep Row 3, changing to CB in final yo of last dc. Fasten off CB.
  • Row 10: Rep Row 2.
  • Row 11: Rep Row 3.
  • Row 12: Rep Row 2, changing to CC in final yo of last sc. Fasten off CA.

Border

  • Rnd 1: Ch 1, turn to work along short edge, 2 sc in side of row, (sc in side of next row, 2 sc in side of next row) 5 times, 2 sc in side of next row, ch 1, turn to work along long edge, 2 sc in first st, sc in ea st across to last st, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn to work along short edge, 2 sc in side of row, (2 sc in side of next row, sc in side of next row) 5 times, 2 sc in side of next row, ch 1, turn to work along long edge, 2 sc in first st, sc in ea st across to last st, 2 sc in last st, join with slip st to first ch 1. Fasten off.
