This post is part of my Cricut basics series. If you’re a new Cricut owner, you’ll want to check out the other posts as you build confidence with your machine. When I first got a Cricut, I was worried that it would be too complicated for me to use, but it turns out that Design Space is pretty straightforward! I recommend starting with the Make It Now projects, then customizing those projects, and finally, designing your own once you have more comfort with the app.

My inspiration for this project was the end of the school year. I know that many readers will have kids, grandkids, or other youngsters around this summer, so it can be a great time to introduce a child to crochet. (You can find my 10 Tips for Teaching Children to Crochet here.)

I looked for one of the Make It Now projects in Design Space that would be a great start to a learn-to-crochet kit, and I came across the Leather Pencil Holder, which is free if you have a Cricut Access subscription. I thought it would work well with crochet hooks, but I wanted to use a vibrant color for the faux leather instead of earth tones. The image below is a screen shot of the project from the iPad Design Space app.

Instructions

Watch the short video below, or read on for the tutorial. If you can’t see the video, click here to watch it on YouTube.

Cut the Faux Leather

  • Open Cricut Design Space and search for “faux leather pencil case” in Cricut Access Make It Now projects. Choose “Leather Pencil Holder.”
  • Review project instructions and when you’re ready to get started, click “Make It.”
  • Note: This project makes 2 pieces (each of which can be used as a crochet hook roll or pencil holder). I used the smaller piece from the second mat for this tutorial.

  • Set your Cricut’s pressure setting wheel to Custom. Choose “Cricut Faux Leather” from the drop down menu.
  • Place Cricut Faux Leather on the cutting mat with the color side up.
  • Choose “Go” and follow the instructions for cutting.
  • Once your faux leather is cut, remove it from the mat.

Weed the Faux Leather

  • Use your weeder to remove the cut out faux leather from your project.
  • Tip: Cut excess pieces away with scissors before weeding so you can use the faux leather scraps for other projects.
