One of the complaints I’ve often heard about using the Traditional Granny Square pattern for blankets is that it has too many spaces and holes and isn’t warm enough. If this is one of your concerns, too, you’ll enjoy today’s pattern for the Double Crochet Granny Square. This variation of the traditional granny square is a more solid motif that provides warmth and coverage.

This variation on the traditional granny square creates a more solid motif for a warmer project. It’s one of several motifs used in the Classic Granny with a Twist Blanket.

Finished Size

  • Motif: 6.75” (17 cm) square.

Materials

  • Red Heart With Love yarn (100% acrylic, 7 oz/198 g/370 yd/338 m) – 1 skein in 1502 Iced Aqua, or approximately 50 yd (46 m) in any medium weight yarn.


  • US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. (I used a Clover Amour hook.)
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Motif = 6.75” (17 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • ea – each
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • () Instructions within parenthesis are worked into indicated stitch or space.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

Motif

  • Ch 4, sk 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc, here and throughout), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, [dc in next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc)] 3 times, 2 dc in first st, ch 2, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. (24 sts + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same ch-3 sp, [*dc in each st across to corner ch-3 sp,** (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, 2 dc in first ch-3 sp, ch 2, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. (40 sts + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 3. (56 sts + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 3. (72 sts + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in same ch-3 sp, [*dc in each st across to corner ch-3 sp,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, 2 dc in first ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm) for joining. (88 sts + 4 ch-3 sp)

Finishing

  • Join to other granny squares using your preferred method. With yarn needle, weave in ends.
