  • Note: I designed this hat with a very loose fitting band which is most comfortable for me, so if you prefer yours more snug or want to fit it to a smaller head my suggestion is to use a 5 mm or smaller hook in place of the 5.5 mm.

  • 6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 3 skeins sport weight yarn, at least 250 yd each (I used Knitpicks Brava Sport in Cotton Candy)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations Used In This Pattern:

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc2tog – Yo, [insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through 3 loops, yo and draw through 2 loops.
  • FPdc – front post double crochet – Yo, insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. A video tutorial for this stitch is available here.
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch

  • With 6 mm hook and 3 strands of sport weight yarn – 16 dc x 8 rows = 6.5” x 6.5”
  • With 5.5 mm hook and 3 strands of sport weight yarn – 16 sc x 15 rows = 6” x 6”

To Work the Body

  • Beginning with larger hook and using all 3 strands of yarn held together, ch 4 and join with sl st to form ring. Ch 2.
  • Rnd 1: Make 8 sc in ring, sl st in first sc to join. Ch 2.
  • Rnd 2: FPdc around first sc (the same sc as previous sl st) dc in the same sc (increase made). *FPdc around next sc, dc in same sc. Repeat from * around. (8 FPdc, 8 dc- 16 sts total) Sl st in first FPdc to join. Ch 2.
  • Rnd 3: FPdc around first FPdc (the same one as previously sl st in), dc in same FPdc (increase made), dc in next dc. *FPdc around next FPdc, dc in same FPdc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. (8 FPdc, 16 dc – 24 sts total) Join with sl st in first FPdc. Ch 2.
  • Rnd 4: FPdc around first FPdc (the same one as previously sl st in), dc in same FPdc (increase made), dc in next 2 dc. *FPdc around next FPdc, dc in same FPdc, dc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * around. (8 FP dc, 24 dc – 32 sts total) Join with sl st in first FPdc. Ch 2.

  • Rnds 11 – 13: Work even, continuing to make FPdc around each FPdc of previous Rnd. DO NOT work dc in same st as FPdc for the remainder of the pattern. (80 sts around). At the end of each Rnd, join with sl st to first FPdc. Ch 2.
  • Rnd 14: *FPdc, dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog (decrease made), dc in each of next 4 sts. Repeat from *around. (72 sts total). Join with sl st in first FPdc. Ch 2.
  • Rnd 15: *FPdc, dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog, dc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around. (64 sts total) Join with sl st to first FPdc. Ch 2.
  • Rnd 16: *FPdc, dc in next st, dc2tog, dc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around. (56 sts total) Join with sl st to first FPdc. Ch 2.
  • Rnd 17: *FPdc, dc2tog, dc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around. (48 sts total) Join with sl st to first FPdc. Ch 1.
  • Change to smaller hook.

  • Rnd 18: Sc in same st as sl st and in each st around. (48 sc) Join with sl st to first sc. Ch 1.
  • Rnds 19 – 21: Working in BACK LOOPS ONLY, repeat Rnd 18 – 3 more times.

To Work The Brim

  • Row 22: Working this time in the FRONT LOOPS ONLY,  sc 15. Ch 1. Turn work.
  • Row 23 – 26: Work evenly back and forth on 15 sc, ch 1 at the end of each row except the last. Do not turn work after Row 26.

Finishing

  • Row 27: Continuing from the end of Row 26, make a second sc into the same st as previous sc. Working down the edge of the brim, make 5 sc into the edge of each row. Now turn your work and, working along the underside of the brim where it joins the band, sc evenly across the 15 visible loops from Row 22. Turn again and work 5 sc up this edge of the brim as you did with the first side. Sc in same st as first sc of Row 26. Join with sl st to next sc.
  • End off, leaving a 6” tail. Weave in ends.
  • Wear with your favorite outfit and a smile.
