Crochet Pattern: Flattened Shell Hat in 4 Sizes

Woman looking down while wearing striped crochet hat and silver coat against a brick wall | Free crochet pattern: Flattened Shell Hat in 4 sizes in Cascade 220 Superwash Wave yarn by Underground CrafterThe Flattened Shell Hat uses a simple shell stitch pattern and a self-patterning yarn to make an easy hat in four sizes. This is a great starter hat project for a crochet beginner, or a tv/commuting project for a more advanced crocheter.

A few weeks ago, Cascade Yarns sent me a box of yarns to try out. I have been a fan of Cascade 220 Superwash for a years (see the Anthology Blanket Knit-a-Long, or my free crochet patterns for the Rectangular Sampler Blanket, Mod 9-Patch Blanket, or Little Gracie Blanket for some examples). It’s a washable wool yarn that is a little thinner than most medium weight yarns, so you can make some very warm projects without much added bulk. (And, I love wool, but I’m not much for hand washing.) Well, it turns out the folks at Cascade have improved upon the classic with the addition of Cascade 220 Superwash Wave.

I had just one skein, so I decided to make a hat using a flattened shell stitch (hence the name).

I’ll definitely be using this yarn for some bigger projects in the future!
