Book Review

There’s something super fun about boxed sets. Quarto has released a series of amigurumi sets and they sent me some to review.

Sweet and Tasty Treats by Kristen Rask: book review and giveawayby Underground CrafterThe boxes have magnetic flaps, so they are easy to open and close.

Sweet and Tasty Treats by Kristen Rask: book review and giveawayby Underground CrafterInside of Sweet & Tasty Treats: 12 Delectable Designs and Everything You Need to Make 2 Scrumptious Projects by Kristen Rask, you’ll find a booklet, three mini skeins of yarn, fiber fill, a crochet hook, a yarn needle, safety eyes, and a small amount of embroidery floss.

Sweet and Tasty Treats by Kristen Rask: book review and giveawayby Underground CrafterIt’s actually enough to make two projects from the book: a frosted donut by Yummy Pancake and a chocolate cupcake by BerrySprite. So, what’s inside the book?

Sweet and Tasty Treats by Kristen Rask: book review and giveawayby Underground CrafterAs you can see, it’s small enough to bring with you in a project bag as you crochet on the go. The book includes a short introduction by Kristen, a hook size chart, an “about this kit” section that explains what supplies are included, and then it moves into the main chapters. In Techniques and Terms, Kristen shares all the information beginning crocheters will need including how to form a slip knot, basic stitches (including the yarn over, chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet), special stitches (including decreasing and post stitches), and tips for working an adjustable ring and changing color. This section is six pages long and includes many photos. The patterns are then divided into three chapters. Fruits & Veggies includes four patterns, Main Dishes includes five patterns, and Desserts includes three patterns. The patterns are by eight different designers. Each pattern includes a picture of the finished project, an introductory paragraph, a supply list and instructions with several photographs of hands crocheting and the project being joined. The book ends with a short bio of Kristen and all of the designers who contributed to this collection.

If you like the look of adorable amigurumi projects but need a refresher on your crochet skills, this is a great set. Sweet & Tasty Treats would also be wonderful to gift to a teen or just to use as a portable pattern book.
