Book Review

Motif Afghans by Candi Jensen is a portable crochet pattern booklet. It’s about the size of a piece of letter paper folded in half, so it’s easy to put into your project bag. As the name suggests, the booklet includes five patterns for motif blankets, including two made with hexagons (including the one pictured on the cover), two made with squares, and a granny ripple.

Each pattern includes the skill level; a “shopping list” of supplies including yarn listed by weight and color, crochet hook size, and yarn needle; the size and gauge information; instructions for working the motifs; and instructions for seaming and finishing. Three of the patterns also include assembly diagrams.

The end of the booklet includes a guide to pattern abbreviations; a crochet hook size chart; definitions of each skill level; a guide to yarn weights; and the list of actual yarns (including brand name and color number) used to make the samples.

Each pattern includes at least one large picture and most include several pictures.

This booklet includes several classic granny patterns and would be a good “on-the-go” project booklet for crocheters who like to make simple motif patterns. The Ravelry page for this booklet only includes three of the patterns, but you can get an idea of what the patterns look like there. If you already have many granny square books in your collection, you may not need this one, but the portability is great for traveling with your crochet.
