Book Review

Grannies in Bloom is a collection of 6 motif blanket patterns. The booklet includes 5 patterns made with squares and 1 made with hexagons. Each pattern includes a shopping list with yarn listed generically by weight and color, crochet hook size, and gauge information. 5 of the patterns also include a stitch guide describing special stitches within the pattern. The patterns are written in US pattern abbreviations. 4 of the patterns also include assembly diagrams. As the name suggests, all of the patterns include some type of floral motif and some also include detailed borders. The back of the booklet has a General Instructions section with a glossary of pattern abbreviations, symbols, and terms; information about getting gauge, yarn weights, and hook sizes; and written and illustrated instructions for different joins, the adjustable (magic) loop, crocheting in the front loops only, and changing colors. The last page of the booklet lists all of the yarns used for the patterns, including the brand names and color numbers.

Grannies in Bloom is a portable booklet. At 32 pages long and about the size of a piece of letter paper, it will fit into a larger project bag (which, of course, you’d need if you were making a blanket!). It easily lays flat so you can read while you crochet. Some of the designs are the traditional floral afghans that you may have in your pattern collection, but the Filet Floral and Checkerboard Floral patterns are much more unique, while the lacy border on Classic Shells is very beautiful. The booklet doesn’t have a Ravelry page, but you can see all the designs here on Leisure Arts.

If you enjoy crocheting blankets and using motifs, this is a nice collection with a good mix of classic and modern styles to try out.
