Knitting Pattern: Garter Ridge Headband

Garter Ridge Headband, free knitting pattern in Lion Brand Stitchbird yarn by Underground Crafter

The Garter Ridge Headband combines a simple, textured stitch to allow the color-changing, netted yarn to shine. This is the eighth pattern in the Finishing Touches Knit Along with KAL Corner and it works up quickly to make a great last-minute gift, or even a last-minute earwarmer for a cold snap.

The weather has been warming up in New York City, but it is still dipping regularly below 40 degrees. I don’t quite feel that a hat is necessary, but some nights after work, I still want to cover my ears.

Recently, I got the chance to try a new-to-me yarn, Lion Brand Stitchbird. It has a black netting over the fiber which is light and airy, like roving. The yarn changes color in unexpected ways. I really enjoyed working with it, but I knew that a complicated stitch pattern would get “lost” in the yarn…

I decided to use one of my favorite classic stitch patterns, the garter ridge. (I’ve previously used it in a square in the Anthology Blanket here, and in the Garter Ridge Dishcloth here.)

I used my Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular needles for this project because they are gentle on my hands. In the winter months and in transitional weather, metal needles are not as comfortable for me.

Garter Ridge Headband

Knitting Pattern by Underground Crafter

Garter Ridge Headband, free knitting pattern in Lion Brand Stitchbird yarn by Underground Crafter

This headband works up quickly in a bulky yarn. A simple, textured stitch pattern allows a special yarn to shine. This is the eighth pattern in the Finishing Touches Knit Along with KAL Corner.

Finished Size

  • Adult: 20” (51 cm) headband circumference x 3” (7.5 cm) height. See Pattern Notes for instructions for customizing size.

Materials

Gauge

  • 11 sts = 3” (7.5 cm) across in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BO – bind off
  • CO – cast on
  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • rep – repeat
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sl – slip stitch knitwise
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • *Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • A video tutorial for this stitch pattern is available at the end of this pattern.
  • A tutorial for seaming with the mattress stitch is available here.
  • To customize this headband pattern to a different finished size:
    • The cast on stitches will determine the height of the headband. Adjust your cast on stitches in multiples of 4 sts, + 3 sts so that it is as wide as you want your headband to be.
    • The length will determine the circumference of the headband. I recommend 1” – 2” (2.5 cm – 5 cm) of negative ease for headbands. This means that the headband will measure 1” – 2” (2.5 cm – 5 cm) smaller than the circumference of the head you want it to fit.
    • If you want to make the headband for someone whose head you can’t measure, my preferred hat sizing chart is this one from Top Toppers. Remember that this lists head circumference, not headband circumference.

Pattern Instructions

Headband

  • CO 11 sts, or any multiple of 4 sts, + 3 sts.
  • Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, *p1, k3; rep from * across to last 2 sts, p2.
  • Row 2: Sl 1, k1, *p3, k1; rep from * across to last st, p1.
  • Row 3: Rep Row 1.
  • Row 4: Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
  • Rep Rows 1-4 until headband measures approximately 20” (51 cm) long, or approximately the desired finished headband circumference, ending after a repeat for Row 3.
  • BO in pattern for Row 4. Fasten off with a long yarn tail for seaming, approximately 12” (30.5 cm) long.

Assembly and Finishing

  • Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail. With wrong (back) sides facing, seam short edges together using the mattress stitch (see Pattern Notes).
  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of headband.

Crochet Pattern: Zebra Pocket Pillow

Zebra Pocket Pillow, free crochet pattern in Red Heart Super Saver stuffed with • Fairfield Poly-Fil Crafter’s Choice Dry Polyester Fiber Fill by Underground Crafter

I’m kicking off the second annual Softie Crochet Along with CAL Central with the Zebra Pocket Pillow! This crocheted amigurumi pillow has a pocket panel that you can use as gift wrap, to tote a favorite book, or to store your tablet.

This post contains affiliate links. I may receive compensation (at no added cost to you) if you make a purchase using these links. Materials for the sample were generously provided by Clover USA, Fairfield World, and Red Heart.

Last year, I made the Lion Pocket Pillow for the first Softie CAL and I kind of felt like he needed a buddy.

Free crochet pattern: Lion Pocket Pillow in Red Heart Super Saver yarn and stuffed with Fairfield Original Poly-Fil by Underground Crafter. This pattern is one of 10 free crochet patterns by 10 designers in the 2018 Softie Crochet Along with CAL Central

Since the basics of the panel shapes would be the same, I decided to add some interest with stripes, and that’s where the idea for the Zebra Pocket Pillow was born.

Just like its Lion Pocket Pillow pal, the Zebra Pocket Pillow has a generous pocket panel. This is great for encouraging your littles to read, for including a small gift, or for putting a tablet out of reach.

For this year’s Softie CAL, Fairfield World generously provided all of the participating designers with Crafter’s Choice Dry Polyester Fiber Fill. This happens to be one of my favorite fiber fillings to use for making crocheted softies.

Zebra Pocket Pillow, free crochet pattern in Red Heart Super Saver stuffed with • Fairfield Poly-Fil Crafter’s Choice Dry Polyester Fiber Fill by Underground Crafter - Marie with fiber fill bag

It’s coarser and denser than the standard Poly-Fil. That means it doesn’t “fluff out” as much when you are stuffing your project. It helps because then you aren’t accidentally crocheting your Poly-Fil onto the right side of your projects.

Gauge

  • 18 sc x 20 rows = 4” (10 cm). Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern but stitches should be small so that fiber filling doesn’t show.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • ch – chain
  • pm – place stitch marker
  • Rnd(s) – Rounds
  • sc  – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo  – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • Front Panel, Back Panel, Pocket Panel, and Ears are crocheted flat in rows.
  • Eyes and Muzzle are crocheted in unjoined spirals in the round. Move stitch markers up each round to mark position of last stitch.
  • Mane is crocheted in the round when joining layers with single crochet seam. A helpful photo tutorial for seaming with single crochet is available here.
  • When choosing colors, note that CA and CB are used for Panel stripes. CA is used for Eyes. CB is used for the Muzzle and Ears.
  • Change colors in the last yarn over of the final single crochet of designated rows. Moogly has a helpful video tutorial here.
  • Oombawka Design has a helpful magic adjustable ring tutorial here.
  • If you are crocheting in low light conditions, you may find black yarn difficult to work with. Choose two high contrast colors instead of black and white to make it easier to see your stitches.

Crochet Pattern: Color Block Slouchy Hat

Color Block Slouchy Hat, free crochet pattern in Yarnspirations Patons Alpaca Blend yarn by Underground Crafter

I’m excited to kick of the 2019 International Crochet Month Designer Showcase with the free crochet pattern for the Color Block Slouchy Hat. This beginner-friendly pattern is crocheted flat and then seamed. It uses the pebble stitch, also known as the lemon peel stitch, a simple stitch combination that adds lots of texture to a pattern. You can wear this hat so many different ways and the Pattern Notes explain how to easily customize it to fit any size head!

This post contains affiliate links. I may receive compensation (at no added cost to you) if you make a purchase using these links. Materials for the sample were generously provided by Yarnspirations and Clover USA.

Before I share the pattern with you, let me tell you a little bit about the Crochet Guild of America. It’s a volunteer organization that is all about sharing the love of crochet! I’ve been a member for at least a decade. One of my favorite member benefits is the free mentoring program for people just entering into the yarn industry as designers, tech editors, sample makers, or other professions. When I was starting out, I was in this program and it was wonderful to have another designer helping me out, one-on-one, as I started designing my own crochet patterns.

Proud Supporter of the Crochet Guild of America

Most people reading this post, though, are probably not planning to start a crochet business anytime soon, so you’re probably wondering about the other membership benefits. Some of my favorites are the subscription to Crochet! magazine; the discounts to great suppliers like Leisure Arts, Annie’s, and Mary Maxim; and (I may be a little bit biased here, since I edit it) the member newsletter.

If you’re just hearing about the 2019 International Crochet Month Designer Showcase, you can get all the details and enter the giveaways here.

You may be wondering about the Color Block Slouchy Hat. It’s a design I made to match the free crochet pattern for the Split Screen Pom Pom Scarf.

Free crochet pattern: Split Screen Pom Pom Scarf in Patons Alpaca Blend yarn by Underground Crafter

I had Patons Alpaca Blend yarn left over after finishing the scarf, and I thought a matching hat would be great. When I was thinking about the best way to make a color blocked hat, I decided to crochet it flat in rows.

And, I wanted to use one of my all-time favorite stitch patterns, the pebble stitch. Recently, I’ve seen other designers calling in the lemon peel stitch, so you may have heard that name. (If you love this stitch, too, try my free crochet patterns for the Pebble Stitch Hat or the Pebble Rib Scarf.)

The color blocking makes this hat versatile. You can wear it with the colors split down the front, or wear it with one color showing at the front and the other color showing at the back.

I’ve also included instructions for customizing the size to fit any head. You can use any weight of yarn, too — as long as you match it an appropriately sized hook, of course.

If you make your own Color Block Slouchy Hat, I’d love to see it! Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

This beginner-friendly hat is crocheted flat and then seamed. Follow the Pattern Notes to easily customize this pattern to fit another sized head.

This is the first pattern in the 2019 International Crochet Month Designer Showcase. Learn more about the Showcase and how you can get 31 free and discounted crochet patterns and enter for your chance to win one of 13 prizes here.

Finished Size

  • Adult: 22” (56 cm) hat circumference x 11” (28 cm) height with instructions for adjusting to fit other head sizes.

Materials

  • Patons Alpaca Blend yarn (60% acrylic/22% wool/10% nylon/8% alpaca, 3.5 oz/100 g, 155 yd/142 m) – 1 skein each in 01018 Ultraviolet (CA) and 01002 Smoke (CB), or approximately 138 yd (126 m) in each of 2 colors in any bulky weight yarn.
  • US K-10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Clover Extra-Large Pom Pom Maker (optional).

Gauge

  • 12 sts = 4” (10 cm) across in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Moogly has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop in crochet here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • rep – repeat
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • *Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 1 at beginning of Rows does not count as a stitch.
  • Swellamy Crochet has helpful photos showing “the cinch method” of closing a slouchy beanie here
  • A helpful tutorial for seaming with the mattress stitch is available here.
  • You can use this “recipe” for the Color Block Slouchy Hat to make a hat in a different size or using a thicker or thinner yarn with an appropriately sized hook. Remember that changing the gauge or the size may mean you will need more or less yarn than I’ve used.
  • To customize this hat pattern to a different finished size:
    • The starting chain will determine the height of the hat. Since this hat is slouchy and the brim can roll up, I added 3” (7.5 cm) to the height I wanted for the finished hat. Adjust your starting chain so that it is as long as you want your hat to be tall.
    • The rows will determine the circumference of the hat. I recommend 1” – 2” (2.5 cm – 5 cm) of negative ease for hats. This means that the hat will measure 1” – 2” (2.5 cm – 5 cm) smaller than the circumference of the head you want the hat to fit. Once you know the circumference for your hat, work the length of each color to measure approximately half of the hat circumference.
    • If you want to make the hat for someone whose head you can’t measure, my preferred hat sizing chart is this one from Top Toppers. Remember that this lists head circumference, not hat circumference.

Pattern Instructions

Slouchy Hat

  • With CA, ch 33, or any odd number of chains.
  • Row 1: Turn, sk 1 ch, *sc in next ch, dc in next ch; rep from * across. (32 sts)
  • Row 2: Turn, ch 1, starting in first st, *scBL in next st, dcBL in next st; rep from * across.
  • Rep Row 2 until project measures approximately 11” (28 cm), or approximately half of desired finished hat circumference. Fasten off CA.
  • Row 3: Turn, join CB with sl st to first st, ch 1, starting in first st, *scBL in next st, dcBL in next st; rep from * across.
  • Rep Row 2 until project measures approximately 22” (56 cm), or approximately the desired finished hat circumference.  Fasten off CB with a long yarn tail for seaming, approximately 36” (91.5 cm) long.

Assembly and Finishing

  • Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail. Weave yarn needle through each stitch on long edge (the edge with both colors). Slowly tighten yarn tail to pull top of hat closed (see Pattern Notes for link to “cinch method” pictures). You may need to sew top of hat closed after tightening yarn tail for larger sizes.
  • Continue to seam side of hat by joining each of the shorter edges together using the mattress stitch (see Pattern Notes).
  • Make pom pom following instructions on Clover Extra-Large Pom Pom Maker. Make half in CA and half in CB. Alternatively, make a pom pom by hand using this tutorial.
  • Attach pom pom to top (cinched end) of hat using yarn needle and yarn tail that tied pom pom together.
  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of hat.
