Back in January, I went to Creativation, the annual trade show for the craft and hobby industry. Creativation is where I get to see all the new craft products, meet other bloggers and craft companies, and hang out with my favorite bloggers. Here’s an Instagram post from the craft blogger meet up on the first night. (Yep, I’m the third one on the right with the salt and pepper hair!)

Leisure Arts is one of the many companies that exhibits at Creativation and I got to see some of their new books. They also gave me some awesome goodies from their adult coloring supplies. If you’re new to the world of adult coloring, it’s just as fun as coloring was as a kid, but with way better designs. I’m sharing this set of supplies that I got at Creativation with one lucky winner!

Book Review: Yarn Pooling Made Easy by Marly Bird

Book review: Yarn Pooling by Marly Bird via Underground CrafterI’m so excited to be part of Marly Bird’s blog tour for her latest pattern booklet, which will help you explore planned color pooling in crochet. If you’ve ever wondered how to control those pools of color your variegated yarn makes when you’re crocheting, you may have found your book. Oh, and did I mention the giveaway? Yeah, there’s one of those, too, so read on for details.

A free review copy of Yarn Pooling Made Easy was provided to me by Leisure Arts. Although I accept free products for review, I do not accept additional compensation, nor do I guarantee a positive review. My reviews are based entirely on my honest opinions.

Book review: Yarn Pooling Made Easy by Marly Bird via Underground Crafter

Many crocheters (and knitters) already know Marly Bird as a designer, the National Spokesperson for Red Heart Yarns, and/or as the host of the Yarn Thing Podcast. She’s also a teacher on Craftsy and Creativebug, and, of course, an author.

Marly’s latest is Yarn Pooling Made Easy, a crochet pattern booklet focused on creating argyle patterns using planned color pooling with variegated yarns. The booklet opens with a brief introduction and a link to Marly’s blog section on planned pooling. (She also has a YouTube playlist with all of her planned pooling videos.) It continues on to providing some planned pooling tips and a biography of Marly.

The booklet then moves right into the patterns. There are 10 patterns in total, including 4 scarves/cowls, 3 women’s accessories, 2 baby/child wearables, and a car seat blanket. All of the patterns are rated as easy and use medium weight yarns from Red Heart. Each pattern includes the finished size, a shopping (materials) list, gauge information (including tips for creating a gauge swatch), a stitch guide, and detailed instructions using U.S. pattern abbreviations. Each pattern includes at least one large photograph (on a model or in use), but most include several pictures.

The booklet ends with a General Instructions section that includes yarn and hook size information, a comparison of U.S. to U.K./international abbreviations, a glossary of abbreviations and symbols, information about gauge, instructions for joining with single crochet, and written and illustrated instructions for the magic ring and reverse single crochet. The book ends with Yarn Information that provides details on the yarn used in each project.

Yarn Pooling Made Easy is a paperback pattern booklet that lays flat so you can read and crochet at the same time. Like all pattern booklets, you will enjoy the book more if you want to make the included patterns. The patterns aren’t posted to Ravelry yet, but you can see them in a series of videos on Marly’s YouTube channel. My favorite patterns are the Wristers, Cowl, & Hat Set…

…and the Poncho with Raglan Yoke.

If you’re interested in planned color pooling and you like the patterns you see on Marly’s YouTube channel, check out Yarn Pooling Made Easy!

Dishcloth Dresses and More Dishcloth Dresses by Debbie Trainor

Knitting Book Reviews: Dishcloth Dresses and More Dishcloth Dresses by Debbie Trainor on Underground Crafter

I’m reviewing two knitting pattern booklets by Debbie Trainor from Stitches by Debbie. You can also find Debbie on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Ravelry, and Twitter. I’ll be sharing a giveaway for these books at the end of the post, so read on for details.

This post contains affiliate links. I may receive compensation (at no added cost to you) if you make a purchase using these links. Review/giveaway copies of Dishcloth Dresses and More Dishcloth Dresses were provided to me by Debbie Trainor. Although I accept free products for review, I do not accept additional compensation, nor do I guarantee a positive review. My reviews are based entirely on my honest opinions.

Knitting Book Reviews: Dishcloth Dresses and More Dishcloth Dresses by Debbie Trainor on Underground Crafter

Book Reviews

Let’s start by answering the question of what is a dishcloth dress? I’ll admit that I wasn’t familiar with them until I started chatting with Debbie on Ravelry. Dishcloth dresses are adorable cover ups for liquid dish soap. They can fit a variety of brands of soaps because they are attached at the neck and not at the waist. Debbie’s samples for both books were made with Lily Sugar ‘N Cream, a 100% cotton medium weight yarn, so they can also double as washcloths, potholders, or other tools in the kitchen (because cotton doesn’t melt like synthetic yarn when exposed to heat).

So now that you know what a dishcloth dress is, let me tell you about the booklets.

Knitting Book Reviews: Dishcloth Dresses and More Dishcloth Dresses by Debbie Trainor on Underground Crafter

Dishcloth Dresses opens with a visual table of contents with thumbnails of each of the 12 knitting dishcloth dress patterns included in the booklet. Each pattern includes a difficulty level (though they are all rated Easy); a shopping list that includes the yarn colors and yardage/meterage required, the needle size, and any additional supplies; a list of techniques with reference to the page including any tutorials; and the instructions written in U.S. pattern abbreviations. Each pattern also includes a large, full color photo of the dishcloth dress on a soap bottle in a styled background. You can see all of the included patterns here on the booklet’s Ravelry source page. At the back of the booklet, the General Instructions section includes information about pattern reading, yarn and needle sizes, difficulty levels, and gauge; as well as illustrated instructions for 3 methods of increasing, 7 methods of decreasing, 2 methods for changing colors, and basic crochet stitches (which are used edges); and information about the specific yarns used for each sample.

Knitting Book Reviews: Dishcloth Dresses and More Dishcloth Dresses by Debbie Trainor on Underground Crafter

More Dishcloth Dresses follows a similar layout but includes 7 knitting dishcloth dress patterns designed for different days of the week. The back matter is similar to that from Dishcloth Dresses, but, based on the patterns included in the booklet, has 6 methods for decreases (instead of 7) and 1 method for changing colors (instead of 2). You can see all 7 patterns from this booklet here on the Ravelry source page.

These booklets include adorable projects and they would be a great way for inexperienced knitters to learn increases and decreases on small projects. As with all pattern booklets, your enjoyment will be increased if you like the included patterns. If you like knitting for the kitchen, giving last-minute knit gifts, or want to experiment with increasing and decreasing, I recommend Dishcloth Dresses and More Dishcloth Dresses.

Granny Square Month with Underground Crafter | 30 days of crochet motif patterns, roundups, and giveaways!

Book Review

50 Fabulous Crochet Squares is a pattern collection by four designers (Jean Leinhauser, Rita Weiss, Janie Herrin, and James G. Davis). The squares in this collection are made in medium weight yarn and are available in a variety of sizes, including

  • 5″ squares – 1 pattern,
  • 6″ squares – 1 pattern,
  • 6.5″ squares – 2 patterns,
  • 7″ squares – 14 patterns,
  • 7.5″ squares – 5 patterns,
  • 8″ squares – 10 patterns,
  • 8.5″ squares – 3 patterns,
  • 9″ squares – 4 patterns,
  • 9.5″ squares – 1 pattern,
  • 10″ squares – 2 patterns,
  • 11″ squares – 1 pattern,
  • 11.5″ squares – 1 pattern, and
  • 12″ squares – 4 patterns.

These patterns are mostly large, intricate squares designed for an experienced granny square crocheter who wants to work on layered, lacy, or otherwise interesting patterns. Each pattern includes a large, flat-lay photo, a list of colors being used, and a pattern written with U.S. pattern abbreviations. The collection also includes a key to pattern abbreviations in the back and a key to comparing U.S. to U.K. pattern abbreviations. The book lays flat so it is easy to crochet while reading a pattern.

You can find pictures of all 50 patterns in the book on its Ravelry source page here.

50 Fabulous Crochet Squares is ideal for an intermediate crocheter who wants to move beyond basic granny squares and who likes working on larger motifs. Because the collection doesn’t include any instructional material, it isn’t suitable for a beginning crocheter. The large pictures and text make it easier to follow along with the pattern than some other booklets that include multiple patterns on the same page to save space. (Each pattern in this book is written over one to two pages.)
