Amy from The Stitchin’ Mommy and Rhondda from Oombawka Design are some of my favorite blogger buddies, so I’m very excited to be part of their fourth annual Scarf of the Month Club.

Free crochet pattern: Crunch Stitch Infinity Scarf in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Bonus Bundle by Underground CrafterEarlier this week, I shared the free knitting pattern for the Seeds and Cables Scarf. It was made with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick Bonus Bundle yarn, a larger skein of Wool-Ease Thick and Quick with enough yarn for a scarf. I loved the idea of crocheting a larger project quickly and without weaving in a lot of ends, so I decided to make a crochet pattern using Bonus Bundle, too.

Free crochet pattern: Crunch Stitch Infinity Scarf in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Bonus Bundle by Underground CrafterI took some of the photos at the Brooklyn Promenade (which you may recognize as the backdrop to the Promenade Shawl). It’s got the best view of the Manhattan skyline around.

Let me tell you a little about the Crunch Stitch Infinity Scarf. I used the crunch stitch, which is one of my favorite stretchy, ribbed patterns. I sometimes use it for hat bands. It makes a really squishy, cozy infinity scarf.

Free crochet pattern: Crunch Stitch Infinity Scarf in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Bonus Bundle by Underground Crafter The crunch stitch in the back loop also has a knit look, and it’s very unisex.

Knitting Pattern: Seeds and Cables Scarf | Finishing Touches Knit Along #2

Free knitting pattern: Seeds and Cables Scarf in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick Bonus Bundle yarn by Underground Crafter |Today’s knitting pattern is the Seeds and Cables Scarf. It’s the second pattern in the Finishing Touches Knit Along with KAL Corner. If you love the bold look of cables, this may become your new favorite scarf. And, the seed stitch background sets off the cables while keeping your project from curling.

I love the look of cables, but I’m a relatively slow knitter. When Lion Brand released the Wool-Ease Thick and Quick Bonus Bundle yarn, I was pretty excited. It’s a larger skein of Wool-Ease Thick and Quick with enough yarn for a scarf in one skein.

Free knitting pattern: Seeds and Cables Scarf in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick Bonus Bundle yarn by Underground Crafter | Scarf with shawl pin on smiling womanI love that the cables really pop, but with a super bulky yarn, I can knit up the scarf much faster. And, of course, there are fewer yarn tails to weave in with one skein than with two!

Free knitting pattern: Seeds and Cables Scarf in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick Bonus Bundle yarn by Underground Crafter | Scarf as infinity scarf with ends tucked inIf you prefer an infinity scarf, I’ve included instructions for seaming the scarf together. You may want to leave off the garter stitch borders, but I actually think they would add a nice touch on an infinity scarf.

Tunisian Crochet Basics

Are you new to Tunisian crochet? I first tried it back in 2007 when I was in the Craft Yarn Council’s Certified Instructor Program and I immediately fell in love! Tunisian crochet is a deceptively simple crochet technique that uses a specialized hook with a stopper on the end. These hooks are made in a variety of materials…

New Year, New Skill Crochet-a-Long with CAL Central - January 16 - March 6, 2017 - Week 1: Tunisian Crochet - Visit CAL Central on Facebook or Ravelry for more details… but my favorite Tunisian crochet hooks are the ones made by Denise Interchangeables (like the one on the far right above). To make this project, I used the N-15/10 mm hook from my Denise2Go Crochet for a Cure 2-Hook Set (shown below). (This set has two hooks in each size, so you can also use it for double-ended crochet.) You can read my review of Denise hooks here.

So, why do you need a hook with a stopper? Well, unlike “standard” crochet, each row of Tunisian crochet includes two parts: a “forward,” where you pick up loops that you keep on the hook (kind of like in knitting) and a “return,” where you work those loops off the hook. Tunisian crochet creates a “knit-like” look and the fabric you make with the yarn feels different than what you make with a standard crochet hook.

Today’s pattern for the Moss Stitch Hat uses two of Tunisian crochet’s main stitches: the Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss) and the Tunisian Purl Stitch (Tps). In the hat band, the stitches are combined to create columns, like ribbing, but in the hat, they are combined to create an alternating texture.

This hat is designed to meet the donation requirements for Hats 4 The Homeless, an organization that distributes handmade winter accessories to New York City’s homeless population, and as part of Lion Brand’s celebration of #YarnHeroes As you may have guessed, I had a wee bit of funny dressing up as Yarn Hero Underground Crafter a few weeks ago. (That’s right, I don’t have a special super hero name. Because I’m already a super hero, crafting in the subways, no matter how crowded they are!)

I aimed for my best Christopher Reeve as Superman “up, up and away” pose (with the addition of a crochet hook, of course), and I wore some of my favorite Lion Brand projects (all of which are available as free crochet patterns): the Not Too Fussy Cap, the Layers of Texture Infinity Scarf, and the Triplet Ripple Baby Blanket (which was pretty awesome as a cape).

Besides providing myself with some entertainment on a chilly afternoon, this photo was a reminder of the joy that our handiwork can provide to others.

My newsletters subscribers know that last weekend, I went through my crochet and knitting projects from the last year to find some that were suitable for donation.Free crochet pattern: Not Too Fussy Cap (Super Bulky Version in 6 sizes) in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick by Underground Crafter | Like the medium weight version, this unisex beanie has just enough texture to keep things interesting but not enough to make it “fussy” for the wearer. About Hats for the Homeless

Hats for the Homeless distributes warm hats, gloves, and scarves to homeless people in my hometown of New York City every year during the weekend before Christmas at the St. Francis Xavier Soup Kitchen in Chelsea (the neighborhood where I attended junior high school). As you might imagine, winters in New York City can be brutally cold, and even more so for those living on the streets.

Hats for the Homeless collects donations of new and handmade hats, scarves, and gloves throughout the year. Donations can be mailed to the address listed on the website. You are also encouraged to host a drive to collect new and handmade items for donation. More details can be found here.

Tips for Making Winter Accessories to Donate to Homeless People

Whether you plan to mail your donation to Hats for the Homeless or distribute your gifts locally, keep in mind these tips.

  • Choose dark colors to hide dirt between washings.
  • Avoid novelty yarns, metallic threads, or embellishments. Gender neutral colors allow the wearer to blend in to their surroundings without drawing too much attention to themselves. This is especially important for safety reasons for homeless people who live in the streets.
  • When possible, use easy care yarns that can be machine washed and dried when facilities are available. Label projects made with wool in case the recipient has allergies.
  • Weave in ends securely to ensure your projects are sturdy and don’t unravel with heavy wear and washing.
  • Use dense stitch patterns without eyelets or lace for maximum warmth. Hats should be long enough to cover the ears and scarves should be wide enough to cover the neck before wrapping.

Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

Free crochet pattern: Not Too Fussy Cap (Super Bulky Version in 6 sizes) in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick by Underground Crafter | Like the medium weight version, this unisex beanie has just enough texture to keep things interesting but not enough to make it “fussy” for the wearer. This hat is designed to meet the donation requirements for Hats 4 The Homeless, an organization that distributes handmade winter accessories to New York City’s homeless population, and as part of Lion Brand’s celebration of #YarnHeroes

FO Friday: Ribbed Beanie

I got a lot of knitting done during jury duty this week.  (No, I wasn’t on a trial, just sitting in an air conditioned waiting room for a while and then the last juror in the selection room for a longer while so it was obvious I wasn’t ever going to get questioned.)

I finished up this beanie for my cousin for Christmas.  I’m happy to report that I’ve already finished four winter holiday gifts as part of my Holiday Stashdown Challenge.  Yay!

This was a quick knit on size 15 needles.

I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick for the cuff…

… and two strands of Moda Dea Tweedle Dee for the rest of the hat.  This is a great stash buster.  I used a simple 3 by 3 ribbing throughout.  I plan to make something similar for my other cousin (his brother) in a different colorway.  You can see my Ravelry project page here.  I tried it on MC to verify that it would fit a grown man, but I wasn’t able to lure him out into the blazing sun to model for a finished picture.
