Crochet Pattern: Puff Stitch Slouch

Free crochet pattern: Puff Stitch Slouch in 10 sizes in Premier Everyday Soft Worsted Heathers yarn by Underground Crafter | This slouchy beanie uses alternating puff stitches to add a bit of texture. The newborn size meets the donation requirements for Little Hats, Big Hearts, a program of the American Heart Association. #charity #undergroundcrafter #crochet #premieryarnsToday’s pattern for a slouchy beanie uses alternating puff stitches to add a bit of texture. Because you’re working in the round, you don’t even have to do much work to achieve the alternating effect! This pattern is available in ten sizes, but the newborn hat pattern meets the donation requirements for Little Hats, Big Hearts, a program of the American Heart Association. This post is part of my monthly charity spotlight series, where I highlight an organization that accepts handmade donations and provide a free pattern.

January’s Featured Charity: American Heart Association’s Little Hats, Big Hearts

Every February, hospitals around the United States partner with the American Heart Association to raise awareness of congenital heart defects and heart health. Through the Little Hats, Big Hearts program, crocheters and knitters make newborn hats in red that are distributed to parents of babies born in February. The program originated in 2014 in Chicago and has since expanded to most states in the U.S.

How To Make Great Hats for Little Hats, Big Hearts

Projects should be made using easy care (that is, machine washable and dryable) cotton or acrylic yarn. And, of course, the yarn should be entirely (or mostly) red, which is the awareness color used for this program. For safety reasons, yarn tails should be securely woven in and your hat should not include bows or buttons, as these may detach and pose a choking hazard. Hats can be sized to fit babies from micro-preemie through large newborn.

Hats must be sent to the contact person for each state, rather than delivered directly to participating hospitals, so they can be counted, washed, and packaged with educational materials. Select the location nearest you using the drop down menu on this page. (Donors from outside the United States can find the shipping address for international deliveries on the Frequently Asked Questions document on the same page.)

About the Puff Stitch Slouch

I used Premier Everyday Soft Worsted Heathers yarn for my version because I loved the rich, heathered red. It’s also very soft, so even a bald baby (c’mon, you’ve seen ’em) would be comfortable in one of these hats. I used puff stitches to add texture and made it slouchy because there is so much variation in baby head sizes.

I guess great minds think alike because Katie from Salty Pearl Crochet also designed a hat for Little Hats, Big Hearts using the puff stitch. Hers is super adorable! You can get her free crochet pattern here, or by clicking on the photo below, which is shared with her permission.

Crochet Pattern Set: Meandering Walk in the Woods Ripple Scarf and Basketweave Beanie

Free crochet patterns Meandering Walk in the Woods Basketweave Beanie and Ripple Scarf by Underground Crafter | These unisex patterns are made from two skeins of Premier Candy Shop yarn. The Meandering Walk in the Woods Basketweave Beanie and Ripple Scarf set are two unisex accessories for adults that you can make with just two skeins of self-striping yarn.

I started the ripple scarf a few weeks ago when I was in the waiting room at the emergency department while a family member was being seen. I wanted to use an interesting looking pattern that wasn’t too difficult to crochet because my mind wasn’t going to be fully focused.

Free crochet patterns Meandering Walk in the Woods Basketweave Beanie and Ripple Scarf by Underground Crafter | These unisex patterns are made from two skeins of Premier Candy Shop yarn. This pattern features ripples of two different lengths but it uses only one stitch (double crochet) in the pattern. Decreases are worked by skipping stitches. Crocheting this scarf gave me comfort when I needed it, but the Premier Candy Shop colorway (called Twix) reminded me of hiking. It had a kind of adventurous look to it, so that’s where I got the title for this set.

Free crochet patterns Meandering Walk in the Woods Basketweave Beanie and Ripple Scarf by Underground Crafter | These unisex patterns are made from two skeins of Premier Candy Shop yarn. After the scarf was finished, I still had most of the second skein left, so I decided to make a matching beanie. I added some texture to the beanie instead of ripples, so you can wear (or gift) these projects together or separately.

Crochet Pattern: Cobblestone Cap in 3 Sizes

Free crochet pattern: Cobblestone Cap in Premier Yarns Aurora yarn by Underground Crafter | This brimmed, unisex hat uses self-striping yarn to create easy color changes and alternating hook placement to create interesting texture. It’s the first pattern in the 2017 Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along.

Welcome to the first pattern in the 2017 Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along! You can find more information about the CAL here. Be sure to share your completed project pictures of this hat for your chance to win one of 23 prizes in the end-of-CAL giveaway here. Today’s pattern is the Cobblestone Cap in Premier Yarns Aurora. This unisex hat uses a self-striping yarn for easy color work and alternating stitch placement for an interesting texture. It’s available in toddler, child, and adult sizes if you’d like to make one for several people on your handmade holiday list.

So, if you’re new to Premier Yarns Aurora (as I was, before I made this hat), let me tell you a little about it. It’s an ultra soft, self-striping medium weight yarn. It’s a roving-style yarn on the thicker side of medium weight, so the hat feels very warm and plush. I made my hat with one skein of yarn, but I was playing a game of yarn chicken while finishing the brim, so I’ve listed two skeins for the adult size in case your tension is different than mine and you need more yarn. The toddler and child sizes would definitely use less than one skein. Don’t forget that Premier is offering 10% off your entire purchase (one-time use only) through December 28, 2017 with coupon code MS001 if you’d like to use the same yarn and it isn’t stocked in your local area.

And, let me tell you a little bit more about the Cobblestone Cap. The hat starts off simple enough by increasing outward from the crown.

By alternating rounds of single crochet with rounds of half double crochet (and by alternating hook placement each round from the back loop to the third loop), you get some really great texture and a bit of a “knit look.”

The brim can be tipped up or down. If you prefer your brims stiff (I like mine a bit softer), you can use a smaller crochet hook or tighter tension when you crochet the brim.

Best of all (for me at least), there’s enough room inside of the Cobblestone Cap to cover up even the worst hair days.
