Last year, Marly Bird approached me about designing a square for a wedding blanket she was organizing for Ally, our contact at Red Heart yarns. Marly and her team also coordinated a crochet along so that you can have the chance to crochet your own version of the blanket! Find out more about the Wedding Blanket Crochet Along and get links to the rest of the patterns here.

I don’t crochet as many twelve inch squares as I crochet six inch squares, so I decided I would make a 9-patch square that includes nine smaller squares joined together. The Pattern Notes give you links to four different tutorials for methods to join your version of the Great Star Coral Square.

Crochet Pattern: Urban Hiker Slouchy Hat in 6 sizes

Urban Hiker Slouchy Hat free crochet pattern by Underground Crafter in Red Heart Chic Sheep by Marly Bird yarnIt’s almost time for fall and that means hat weather is around the corner! The Urban Hiker Slouchy Hat is a textured, striped, unisex slouchy beanie topped with a pom pom. This slouchy beanie crochet pattern is made using basic stitches, so it’s a great beginner project or a “mindless crochet” project. It’s also available in six sizes, so you’re sure to find the right size for your next project.

This post contains affiliate links. I may receive compensation (at no added cost to you) if you make a purchase using these links. Yarn for the sample was generously provided by Red Heart.

Back in January, I had the chance to interview Marly Bird about her Chic Sheep by Marly Bird yarn at Creativation, the trade show for the crafts industry. If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to have your own line of yarn (and, um, isn’t it your dream? or is that just me?), you’ll find this really interesting.

After finding out how Marly picked out her colors, I’m excited to be part of Red Heart’s Chic Sheep by Marly Bird Designer Blog Tour. Eighteen designers are sharing new free patterns using Chic Sheep by Marly Bird yarn. If you’re new to this yarn, it’s made with Merino wool, a very soft wool that is great for close-to-skin wear. The wool has been treated so that it’s machine washable and doesn’t felt, so you can use Chic Sheep by Marly Bird yarn for projects that you plan to wash often. It’s available in 24 shades. You can find it online at RedHeart.com or at JOANN.

Red Heart Chic Sheep by Marly Bird Designer Blog TourFor my Urban Hiker Slouchy Hat, I used two shades: Velvet (a dark green) and Sterling (a light gray). I wanted to have plenty of contrast between the stripes.

Urban Hiker Slouchy Hat free crochet pattern by Underground Crafter in Red Heart Chic Sheep by Marly Bird yarnI chose these two shades because I wanted this project to be unisex and most of the men I know prefer muted colors.

Urban Hiker Slouchy Hat free crochet pattern by Underground Crafter in Red Heart Chic Sheep by Marly Bird yarnI designed the pattern in six sizes so you can make a coordinating set for your family, or find the size you need for the perfect gift or to donate to charity. And since I couldn’t get enough of those colors, I had to add a pom pom at the end for an extra pop of gray.
