As much as I dislike “hat hair,” there are plenty of times when a beanie is absolutely necessary. When the weather is crazy cold, for example. I have also found that beanies have a greater likelihood of being “dude approved,” at least among the men in my life.

This is a quick, beginner-friendly (or auto-pilot-knitting-while-watching-streaming-video) project. The bulky yarn combined with an easy peasy stitch pattern allow you to speed right through this hat while getting just enough texture to keep things interesting.

The ribbing makes it pretty stretchy, too. So, it’s possible you may be spared from a severe case of hat head.

Knitting Pattern by Underground Crafter

This unisex hat won’t take much time or energy to finish using a bulky yarn and easy stitch pattern. Choose a neutral color so you can wear it season after season!

Finished Sizes

  • Newborn (3-6 months, 6-12 months, 12 months – 2 years, Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large). Photographed sample is size Adult Small.
    • Newborn: 12” (30.5 cm) hat circumference, 5” (13 cm) length.
    • 3-6 months: 14” (35.5 cm) hat circumference, 5.75” (14.5 cm) length.
    • 6-12 months: 15” (38 cm) hat circumference, 6” (15 cm) length.
    • 12 months-2 years: 16” (40.5 cm) hat circumference, 6.5” (16.5 cm) length.
    • Child: 18” (46 cm) hat circumference, 7.25” (18.5 cm) length.
    • Adult Small: 20” (51 cm) hat circumference, 8” (20.5 cm) length.
    • Adult Medium: 21” (53.5 cm) hat circumference, 8.5” (21.5 cm) length.
    • Adult Large: 22” (56 cm) hat circumference, 8.75” (22.5 cm) length.

Materials

  • Bernat Maker Home Dec (72% cotton/28% nylon, 8.8 oz/250 g/317 yd/290 m) – 1 skein in 11019 Pebble Beach, or approximately 225 yd (206 m) in any bulky weight, cotton blend yarn.
  • US Size 10.5/6.5 mm 40” (100 cm) circular knitting needles (or set of DPNs, for small circumference knitting in the round), or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch marker.
  • Clover Pom-Pom Maker – Extra Large (optional).

Gauge

  • 15 sts x 24 rows in pattern = 4” (10 cm). For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • CO – cast on
  • k – knit
  • k2tog – knit 2 sts together
  • p – purl
  • p2tog – purl 2 sts together
  • pm – place marker
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • This beanie is knit in the round from the brim to the crown.
  • Slip marker each round.

Pattern Instructions

Beanie

All Sizes

  • Starting at brim, CO 44 (52, 56, 60, 68, 76, 80, 84) sts.
  • Set Up Row: K across, pm, join and begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.
  • Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
  • Rnd 2: K around.
  • Rep Rnds 1 & 2 until hat measures approximately 4” (4.75”, 5”, 5.5”, 6.25”, 7”, 7.25”, 7.75”)/10 cm (12 cm, 13 cm, 14 cm, 16 cm, 18 cm, 18.5 cm, 19.5 cm) from brim.

Decrease towards crown

Sizes 6-12 Months (Adult Medium) ONLY.

  • Rnd 3: *K2tog, p2, k2, p2; rep from * around. – 49 (70) sts
  • Rnd 4: *K1, k2tog, k4; rep from * around. – 42 (60) sts
  • Rnd 5: *K1, p1, k2tog, p2; rep from * around. – 35 (50) sts
  • Rnd 6: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around. – 28 (40) sts
  • Rnd 7: *K2tog, k1, p1; rep from * around. – 21 (30) sts
  • Rnd 8: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around. – 14 (20) sts
  • Rnd 9: K2tog around. – 7 (10 sts)
  • Continue on to finishing instructions.

Newborn (3-6 months, 12 months – 2 years, Child, Adult Small, Adult Large) ONLY.

  • Rnd 3: K2tog, p2tog, *k2tog, p2, k2, p2; rep from * around. – 37 (44, 51, 58, 65, 72) sts
  • Rnd 4: K2, *k1, k2tog, k4; rep from * around. – 32 (38, 44, 50, 56, 62) sts
  • Rnd 5: K1, p1, *k1, p1, k2tog, p2; rep from * around. – 27 (32, 37, 42, 47, 52) sts
  • Rnd 6: K2, *k3, k2tog; rep from * around. – 22 (26, 30, 34, 38, 42) sts
  • Rnd 7: K1, p1, *k2tog, k1, p1; rep from * around. – 17 (20, 23, 26, 29, 32) sts
  • Rnd 8: K2, *k1, k2tog; rep from * around. – 12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 22) sts
  • Rnd 9: K2tog around. – 6 (7, 8, 9, 10, 11) sts
  • Continue on to finishing instructions.

Finishing

  • Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm). Thread yarn tail through yarn needle. Pull yarn tail firmly through remaining stitches several times, drawing tightly to close crown. Remove sts from needles. With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of hat.
  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions to create pom pom using pom-pom maker.
  • With yarn needle and yarn tails from tying pom pom, secure pom pom to hat by weaving yarn tails in on inside of hat. Weave in remaining ends and fasten off.
