Garter Zig Zag Square, free knitting pattern by Underground Crafter in Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash yarn | This stitch creates a purl zig zag texture on a stockinette background. This is one of 30 free knitting patterns for 6" (15 cm) squares in the Anthology Blanket Knit-a-long.

Finished Size

  • 6″ (15 cm) square.

Materials

  • Cascade 220 Superwash (100% superwash wool), or approximately 41 yds (37.5 m) in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size 7/4.5 mm knitting needles, or any size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Completed square = 6″ (15 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BO – bind off
  • CO – cast on
  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • rep – repeat
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sl 1 – slip 1 st, knitwise
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • * Rep instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Note

  • Pattern repeat is any multiple of 6 sts. Instructions include 4 st borders.

Border

  • Row 1: Knit to last st, p1.
  • Row 2: Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
  • Rows 3 & 4: Rep Row 2 twice.

Garter Zig Zag Stitch pattern

  • Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
  • Row 2: Sl 1, k3, *k3, p3; rep from * across to last 4 sts, k3, p1.
  • Row 3: Rep Row 1.
  • Row 4: Sl 1, k5, *p3, k3; rep from * across to last 2 sts, k1, p1.
  • Row 5: Rep Row 1.
  • Row 6: Sl 1, k4, *p3, k3; rep from * across to last 3 sts, k2, p1.
  • Row 7: Rep Row 1.
  • Row 8: Sl 1, k3, *p3, k3; rep from * across to last 4 sts, k3, p1.
  • Row 9: Rep Row 1.
  • Row 10: Rep Row 6.
  • Row 11: Rep Row 1.
  • Row 12: Rep Row 4.
  • Rep Rows 1-12 until square measures approximately 5.5 in (14 cm), ending after any even row.

Border

  • Rows 1-4: Rep Border Row 2, 4 times.
  • BO in pattern for Border Row 2. Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 3 times the width of square).
