Julie’s signature style for her patterns is to include both written and charted instructions for each line, so this pattern includes both international stitch symbols and U.S. pattern abbreviations.

Pumpkinhead Hat
Crochet Pattern by J Crochet
When the weather starts cooling and the leaves are changing color, ’tis the season for the Pumpkinhead hat!
Sizes:
- Baby: 3-6 months (G/4.25 mm hook)
- Baby: 6-9 months (H/5 mm hook)
Gauge:
- G (4.25) hook: 14 dc stitches = 4 in (10 cm)
- 5 rows = 3 in (7.5 cm)
- H (5) hook: 13 dc stitches = 4 in (10 cm)
- 6 rows = 3.75 in (9.5 cm)
- Sizing hats can be tricky! Four factors come into play:
- Yarn. I used Caron Simply Soft in this pattern, a weight 4 yarn. If using a different brand, know that yarns differ in thickness even in the same weight category. Your final result will be affected if you use a different yarn than the pattern (not that it won’t turn out–you may just have to change your hook).
- Tension. Don’t try to adapt your tension to match mine–do what’s comfortable for you and adjust the hook size, if necessary.
- Hook size. If you find your results vary from mine, you can change the hook size (go to the next largest size if you find your work is smaller and vice versa).
- Hook type. For example, I find that Bates hooks work up larger than Boye (for me).
Finished measurements:
- 3-6 months (6-9 months): 14″ (15″)/35 cm (38 cm) in diameter

- Crochet hook: 3-6 months (6-9 monts): G/4.25 mm (H/5 mm)
- Yarn: Caron Simply Soft (100% acrylic)
- Pumpkin – about 150 yards (137 m)
- Dark Sage – about 16 yards (15 m)
- Tapestry needle optional (for weaving in ends)

- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- ea – each

- hdc – half double crochet
- hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 stitches together – Yo, insert hook in first hdc, yo and pull through, insert in next hdc, yo and pull through, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook – A video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

Pattern Notes:
- This pattern uses American crochet terms.
- I start each round with a chain st that does not stand in for a stitch. This eliminates the gap that sometimes occurs when joining at the end of the round.

- Fasten off.
- Weave in ends.
Stem and vines!
- Color: Dark Sage
Stem:
- Make a pompom using your favorite method.
Vines:
- Ch 25. Beginning with second ch from hook, sl st tightly in each chain (or use smaller hook). When you get back to the beginning, ch 25 and sl st back to beginning twice. Fasten off, leaving length of yarn for attaching.
- Attach vines and stem to top of hat.
