Hey there! I’m Jessica from PsychedelicDoilies.com. I’m excited to share this fun and simple hat pattern with you today.

The Window Block Beanie uses Red Heart Unforgettable yarn. The Unforgettable line is a medium (4) weight roving yarn that is on the thinner side and comes in heaps of funky colors.  It’s my preferred yarn for making dragon scale fingerless gloves which would pair perfectly with this hat!

I designed this beanie specifically with Southerners in mind. The airy yarn tied with the open stitch repeat makes for a not-overly-warm hat for those of us that live in the Deep South.  We Southerners really miss out on all the cute winter accessories but this fashionable slouchy hat is perfect for those frigid 60 degree days we suffer through.

The name and inspiration for this hat comes from a small and handy stitch guide book published by Leisure Arts. I find sometimes it’s fun to thumb through a real book instead of Pinterest when you’ve lost your crojo.

Warning: If you have a teenager, this beanie may magically disappear after completion.

Pattern Instructions

  • CH 66, sl st to join.
  • Row 1: CH 3, DC in each stitch around. (66 DCs)
  • Row 2: CH 3, DC in next 2 stitches, CH 3, sk 3 sts, *DC in next 3 sts, CH 3, sk 3 sts.  Repeat from * around, sl st to top of starting ch 3 to join. (11 sets of 3 DC, 11 ch-3 sps)
  • Row 3: sl st into next 2 sts and into ch -3 sp. CH 3, 2 DC in same sp, CH 3, *3 DC in next ch-3 sp, CH 3. Repeat from * around, sl st to top of starting ch 3 to join. (11 sets of 3DC, 11 ch-3 sps)
  • Row 4: Repeat Row 3.
  • Row 5: CH 3, DC in next 2 sts, 3 DC in ch-3 sp, *DC in next 3 DC, 3 DC in ch-3 sp. Repeat from * around, sl st to top of starting ch 3 to join.  (66 DCs)
  • Rows 6 – 17: Repeat Rows 2 through 5.
  • Row 18: Sl st behind the ch 3 post below (this creates your first BPDC) CH 3, FPDC around next st, BPDC around next st, continue around in this pattern alternating BPDC and FPDC, sl st to top of beginning ch 3.
  • Row 19: Repeat Row 18.
  • Row 20: Repeat row 18.
  • Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

Closing

  • I do not recommend starting this project with a long chain to close the top of the hat because of the nature of roving yarn. If pulled tightly it can break so it’s best to use a standalone piece of yarn in case this happens.
  • If concerned about the yarn breaking you may also use a regular worsted weight yarn to close the hat.
  • Cut approximately 12 inches of yarn. Using a needle, weave the yarn back and forth through your starting chain all the way around, cinching up as you go. Pull yarn tight to close, (but not too tight or it may break!), tie a knot to fasten, and weave in ends.
