I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran for this pattern. I love the coordinated colors and it’s a very soft cotton.

Finished Sizes

  • 3-6 months (2-3 years, 6-10 years, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Large). Photographed sample is Teen/Adult Small.
    • 3-6 months: 6.75” (17 cm) height x 14” (35.5 cm) hat circumference.
    • 2-3 years: 7.75” (19.5 cm) height x 17” (43 cm) hat circumference.
    • 6-10 years: 8.75” (22.5 cm) height x 19.75” (50 cm) hat circumference.
    • Teen/Adult Small: 9” (23 cm) height x 21.25” (54 cm) hat circumference.
    • Adult Large: 9.75” (25 cm) height x 22.5” (57 cm) hat circumference.

Materials

  • Paintbox Cotton Aran yarn (100% cotton, 1.75 oz/50 g/93 yd/85 m) – 1 skein each in 640 Sailor Blue (CA), 633 Washed Teal (CB), 604 Misty Gray (CC), and 601 Paper White (CD), or approximately 40 yd (55 yd, 72 yd, 75 yd, 93 yd)/ 36.5 m (50 m, 66 m, 68.5 m, 85 m) in each of 4 colors in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size G-6/4 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Clover Pom Pom Maker – Extra Large (optional).

Gauge

  • 17 sts = 4” (10 cm) in pattern. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • beg-fdc – beginning foundation double crochet – Ch 4, turn, sk 3 ch, yo, insert hook in next ch, yo and draw up a loop, yo and pull through 1 loop (counts as ch 1), [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice.

  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • CD – Color D
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet

Pattern Notes

  • Hat is crocheted in the round from band to crown.
  • Change color at the end of Round when joining with sl st.
  • Carry unworked yarn up inside of hat when changing colors.

Pattern Instructions

Hat

Ribbed band

  • With CA, beg-fdc, 59 (71, 83, 83, 95) fdc, join with sl st to top of beg-fdc. – 60 (72, 84, 84, 96) sts
  • Rnd 1: Ch 1, starting in first st *FPdc in next 2 sts, BPdc in next 2 sts; rep from * around, join with sl st to first FPdc.
  • Rep Rnd 1 until band measures approximately 1.5” (4 cm). Change to CB with sl st join of last Rnd.

Establish shell pattern

  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, starting in first st, *sc in next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts; rep from * around, change to CC with sl st to first sc.
  • Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc, here and throughout), 2 dc in same st, *sk 2 sts, sc in next st, sk 2 sts,** 5 dc in next st; rep from * around, ending last rep at ** before first st, 2 dc in first st, change to CD with sl st to top of first ch 3.
  • Rep Rnds 2-3, changing color at the end of each Rnd and continuing the color sequence (CB, CC, CD) until hat measures approximately 4.75” (5.75”, 6.75”, 7”, 7.75”)/12 cm (14.5 cm, 17 cm, 18 cm, 19.5 cm) height, ending after a rep of Rnd 2.

Decrease to crown

  • Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, *sk 2 sts, sc in next st, sk 2 sts,** 3 dc in next st, rep from * around, ending last rep at ** before first st, dc in first st, change to next color in sequence with sl st to top of first ch 3. – 40 (48, 56, 56, 64) sts
  • Rnd 5: Ch 1, starting in first st, *sc in next st, sk 1 st, dc in next st, sk 1 st; rep from * around, change to next color in sequence with sl st to first sc.
  • Rnd 6: Ch 3, *sk 1 st, sc in next st, sk 1 st,** dc in next st; rep from * around, ending last rep at ** before first st, change to next color in sequence with sl st to first sc. –20 (24, 28, 28, 32) sts
  • Rnd 7: Ch 1, starting in first st, *sc in next st, dc in next st; rep from * around, change to next color in sequence with sl st to first sc.
  • Rnd 8: Ch 1, starting in first st, sc2tog around, change to next color in sequence with sl st to first sc2tog. – 10 (12, 14, 14, 16) sts
  • Rnd 9: Ch 1, starting in first st, sc2tog around. Fasten off with long yarn tail. – 5 (6, 7, 7, 8) sts

Finishing

  • Thread yarn from Rnd 9 through yarn needle. Seam crown of hat closed.
  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions to create pom pom using Pom Pom Maker and CA.
  • With yarn needle and yarn tails from tying pom pom, secure pom pom to crown by weaving yarn tails in on inside of hat.
  • Use yarn needle to weave in ends on inside of hat.
