About Carmen Nuland

Smiling woman wearing blue knit hat and cowl set | Carmen Nuland/A Simple HomesteadCarmen Nuland is half the brains behind A Simple Homestead – a site about homesteading, cooking, do-it-yourself (DIY) and crafts.  She lives in Wisconsin on a small plot of land with her family, a Basset Hound and flock of hens.

Carmen has tried numerous crafts over the years but was bit by the fiber bug a decade ago when she learned to crochet and knit.  Her designs are full of bright colors and lots of textures, and she doesn’t shy away from challenges.

She has been helping other designers by offering tech editing services for both knit and crochet.  She loves making beaded and polymer clay stitch markers for knitting and crochet, which are available in her shop.

Sick of Winter Washcloth

Knitting Pattern by A Simple Homestead

Blue, lacy knit washcloth on flat wooden surface | Free knitting pattern: Sick of Winter Washcloth by A Simple Homestead for Underground CrafterThe Sick of Winter washcloth is a simple lacy washcloth that I developed one winter when it seemed the cold weather would never end.  Make one – or a dozen in fun colors, to brighten up those dreary months!  One ball of solid worsted cotton should make two washcloths.  This pattern is easy enough for a beginner who wants to branch away from knit and purl stitches to try basic increases and decreases.

Stitches used:

  • CO – cast on
  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • k2tog – knit two together
  • yo – yarn over

Yarns used:

  • 1 ball Lily Sugar’n Cream; worsted weight, 100% Cotton yarn. 120 yards (110 m) / 71 grams. Approximately 50-60 yards (46 – 55m) used per washcloth. Colorways used: 173 Spring Meadows and 1215 Robins Egg Blue.

Needle:

  • US 7 – 4.5 mm

Finished Size:

  • Approximately 8” (20.5 cm) square. Gauge is not critical for this pattern.

  1. Thanks for the pattern. I love to knit and always looking for different patterns. I love the homemade dish cloths and so do my friends and family. I’m also a Wisconsinite and the winters can be very long sometimes and I always want something to knit at night when watching TV. Keep up the good work.
