This is the thirteenth square in the Anthology Blanket Knit-a-Long. The Diagonal Broken Rib Stitch is another variation on ribbing.

Diagonal Broken Rib 6″ (15 cm) Square
Knitting Pattern by Underground Crafter
This stitch is a traveling variation on ribbing.
Finished Size
- 6″ (15 cm) square.
Materials
- Cascade 220 Superwash (100% superwash wool), or approximately 41 yds (37.5 m) in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size 7/4.5 mm knitting needles, or any size needed to obtain gauge.
Gauge
- Completed square = 6″ (15 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- BO – bind off
- CO – cast on
- k – knit
- p – purl
- rep – repeat
- RS – right (front) side
- sl 1 – slip 1 st, knitwise
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- * Rep instructions after asterisk as indicated.
Pattern Note
- Pattern repeat is any multiple of 6 sts. Instructions include 4 st borders.
Pattern Instructions
- CO 32 sts.
Border
- Row 1: Knit to last st, p1.
- Row 2: Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
- Rows 3 & 4: Rep Row 2 twice.
Diagonal Broken Rib Stitch pattern
- Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, k3, *k4, p2; rep from * across to last 4 sts, k3, p1.
- Row 2: Sl 1, k3, *k2, p4; rep from * across to last 4 sts, k3, p1.
- Row 3: Rep Row 1.
- Row 4: Rep Row 2.
- Row 5: Sl 1, k5, *p2, k4; rep from * across to last 2 sts, k1, p1.
- Row 6: Sl 1, k3, p2, *k2, p4; rep from * across to last 8 sts, k2, p2, k3, p1.
- Row 7: Rep Row 5.
- Row 8: Rep Row 6.
- Row 9: Sl 1, k3, *p2, k4; rep from * across to last 4 sts, k3, p1.
- Row 10: Sl 1, k3, *p4, k2; rep from * across to last 4 sts, k3, p1.
- Row 11: Rep Row 9.
- Row 12: Rep Row 10.
- Rep Rows 1-12 until square measures approximately 5.5 in (14 cm), ending after Row 4, Row 8, or Row 12.
Border
- Rows 1-4: Rep Border Row 2, 4 times.
- BO in pattern for Border Row 2. Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 3 times the width of square).

Marie – did you block your square? I tried this stitch recently but couldn’t get my sections to “pop” like you have them.
Carmen, I have been blocking all the squares for this knit-a-long so they are all 6″. I didn’t block the center, though. I may just have a different tension that you.
