New Year, New Skill CAL Week 1: Tunisian Crochet

New Year, New Skill Crochet-a-Long with CAL Central - January 16 - March 6, 2017 - Visit CAL Central on Facebook or Ravelry for more details

Tunisian crochet is one of my favorite crochet techniques, so I’m so excited to kick off the first week of the New Year, New Skill crochet-a-long by featuring four different Tunisian crochet patterns! (If you’re just hearing about the CAL, you can find more details and a regularly updated schedule here.)

Week 1: Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian crochet projects generally require a specialized hook (sometimes called an Afghan hook) with a stopper on one end. As you can imagine, these hooks are available in a variety of lengths and materials. You can see just a few (ahem) from my collection in the picture below. My favorite Tunisian crochet hooks are the plastic ones made by Denise Interchangeables (shown at the far right), which can also be configured as double-ended hooks or standard crochet hooks.

Well, unlike most other crochet techniques, Tunisian crochet stitches are kept on the hook, kind of like knitting stitches. If you don’t have a Tunisian crochet hook (and can’t get your hands on one over the next week), you can also wrap a rubber band tightly on the end of your hook or use a knitting point protector as a temporary stopper.
