Crochet Pattern: C2C Pom Pom Hat

After a short break last month, the charity spotlight series is back. Each month, I highlight a charity that distributes crochet projects and provide a free pattern suitable for donation. This month, I’ll be talking about Halfknits, a volunteer group who is collecting winter accessories for organizations on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Today’s pattern is for a simple C2C crochet hat pattern that can be customized to fit any size. Best of all, you don’t need to worry about gauge!

July’s Featured Organization: Halfknits

Halfknits is a volunteer charity crochet and knitting group that has been going strong in the Dallas/Forth Worth area since 2004. The group meets regularly, so if you’re in the area, you can spend time crocheting for charity with other crafters. (The next meeting is posted in advance on the website with the address of the meeting place.) If you aren’t local and want to ship your crochet projects to a Halfknits-recommended charity, you can find a list here.

I reached out to Halfknits before writing this post and Kat mentioned that Halfknits often works organizations on the Pine Ridge Reservation.  I was excited to hear this because, as my regular readers know, I have been shipping at least one box of winter accessories and/or baby blankets to organizations supported by the Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation for the past six years. This year, Halfknits is making hats, shawls, and blankets to send to the My Space Youth Center. If you’d like to support this year’s drive, you can send your handmade hats, shawls, or blankets for youth and teens to the My Space Youth Center using the appropriate address below:

Free crochet pattern: C2C Pom Pom Hat in Bernat Softee Baby Colors by Underground Crafter | This simple, corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet hat pattern can be customized to fit any size and you don’t need to worry about gauge.

I wanted to make a simple hat project that could be made quickly in case you are in the mood to donate lots of hats to this drive. It uses the corner-to-corner (C2C) stitch, also known as the diagonal box stitch. I’ve included a video tutorial that shows the basics of C2C at the end of this post. I used Bernat Softee Baby Colors because it’s super cute and soft, but also because projects made with light weight yarns are much easier to package for shipping. Since the extra large pom poms use so much yarn, I also wanted to use a thinner yarn because you typically get more yardage in a skein than you would with medium weight yarn.

You can use different color yarn to make the hat more appropriate for boys and girls of different ages, or teens, and the pom poms are optional (but fun).
